Description Das Boot - The Boat, or in this case the U-Boat.

Das boot is a WWII movie made in 1981 about the U-Boat (Unterseeboot, or submarine) U-96, and is in my opinion, one of the best war movies of all time. 'tis best if you watch it in German with subtitles, rather than the dubbed English. (The dialogues are so different! If you know any German, then try listening to both, and you'll find the English dialogue is not the same as the German.)

Anywho, heres a preview if'n yer interested: [link]

This is also my entrance into ~Giggarex 's contest. The contest didn't have an overall theme, so I thought I'd anthropomorphize one of my favorite movies ^^

U571 was a joke as it was British Navy who caught the boat and the enigma machine and not Americans. But Das Boat is classic. good cartoonΒ Β

IT'S TECHNICALLY ACCURATE!
I LOVE YOU!
lol.

Seriously, though, I even recognize that as a type-7 u-boat. Most common type, I think.

I've always wondered what the purpose of the AA gun is. It's not like they're going to successfully protect themselves against air attack with it, lol.

At least later the type 21 got rid of the deck gun. But the war was over before they ever got to use that super awesome sub.

I have to chime in my two cents on this...

It's whimsical and fun considering the original theme concerning Das Boot. I actually like this piece and the way it has been presented. It isn't a dark piece, it's light despite the somber colors used.

Now, I too would have to say the movie is great for its genre. I have to add that it creates an atmosphere in which one gets inside the cramped quarters, the foul odors- artificial and organic- and the amount of sheer terror the crew feels when they're in a vessel that's DESIGNED TO SINK. I actually have a list of submarine movies....This happens to be number one on the list, followed by Run Silent Run Deep, and The Enemy Below....and Operation Petticoat.

Thanks for the insight

Submarines were certainly the most amazing of the vessels ever employed by the navies of any country, in my opinion. What I would like to see is a movie made about the CSS Hunley, now that was an intense submarine!

And that last movie you listed there is one of the best. You just can't beat Cary Grant!

SoftShellback In reply to Icaron [2011-06-19 20:51:00 +0000 UTC]

The Hunley? I think there was a movie for that one. Starred Armand Assante I do believe. No one has ever made a film about the Hunley until that pic, and it was made nearly a decade ago. I guess the reason is that no one was willing to see a movie about ten men who are sent on a suicide run in a ironclad submersible which became a human-piloted torpedo. Talk about depressing! And to boot, they failed the mission.

In the end, though, it was a viable craft and it wasn't until the end of the 19th century and the development of the snorkel and the Diesel engine which paved the way for the "Silent Service."

No, you can't beat Cary Grant!

I agree completely, it was superbly composed and really got you into the story. Did you watch it in German? I listened to both the German version and the English dubbed and found that the dialogue is quite different in meaning, almost like it's a different movie even. The subtitled version finds a good middle ground though.

yeah, if it's an older movie that was originally recorded in another language, i would rather listen to the original language. dubbed versions tend to change the meaning to fit the lip-syncing. Plus it's more fun, somehow. XD have u ever seen La Vita A Bella? now THAT'S a good movie!

Yes, actually. I've been on board the USS Drum, which was a WWII American Submarine turned museum ship. [link] If by cool, you mean cramped, then yes! ^^

The Officer's mess on the Drum was about as big as one of those 8 person booths at a restaurant, if someone need to get past you in a corridor you have to flatten yourself up against the wall, and just about every surface of the interior has some sort of valve/control on it. [link]

Country music? Er, well I like the older type, when it's border-line honky tonk with banjos and scratchy fiddles. ^^

I like random ^^

I like the country music, but not so much the gospel. While I'm not opposed to the religious aspects of it, I don't really like it either. But if the song sounds good enough, it doesn't matter what's being said, I'll still listen to it ^^

A little bit of Das Boot trivia: the submarine used as the U-96 was also used as the U-Boat in Raiders of the Lost Ark, since they were both being made at the same time

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Icaron In reply to Jaredraptor [2009-08-18 02:19:07 +0000 UTC]

Really? Hmm..... I guess so!
They must have painted over the 26 with the swordfish though.

And I've always wondered exactly how Indy managed to ride hundreds of miles ONTOP of a U-Boat, and then into a well guarded Nazi base without getting noticed, and actually surviving the trip.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jaredraptor In reply to Icaron [2009-08-21 03:14:54 +0000 UTC]

xD I can explain that. There's a deleted scene where Indy basically lashes himself to the periscope with his whip (because apparently Nazis kept their periscopes up. lol). Presumable he unlashed himself and swam alongside the sub into the sub pen. lolz.
