They're made out of colored oven-bake polymer clay, then sealed with a gloss glaze.

give him a notepad and pencil, change the orange parts to green and you have Zooky (Gadzooks) from Chris D'Lacey's The Last Dragon Chronicles [link] he and almost all the other dragons in the books are clay models (that come alive sort off) like these (i assume there clay)

Yeah, I remember Gadzooks from The Fire Within. :]
Never read beyond the first book in that series, though. The whole squirrel thing was kind of meh.

it gets better until after fire star where it comes to a natural end but then continues and gets weird very weird

This reminds me of the book the fire within, it had a dragon figurine that came to life, only this one is reading and the one in the book wrote down things XD
