Description
To say Verde was easily overlooked was like saying Clawstride was a shrimp. So Gumi stared at his team leader as he put up a small sticky note on the Thanksgiving board with a gentle smile.
The pink haired boy curiously read the pale green notice. Surprisingly, Verde had a pretty neat cursive writing for somebody so huge and brute looking. But his weapon was cool! And that was all that mattered to Gumi.
“I’m thankful for no more trumpet wake up calls?” Gumi looked confused and almost jumped when somebody put their hand on his head. There was only one person who developed this particular habit.
“Yeah, my older siblings plays trumpets. All the time.” Verde let out a small sigh of annoyance before patting his messenger bag.
“I got this from my fam. But I’m really glad I’m away from Dart and Arley.” Gumi spotted many names stitched on the lapel of Verde’s messenger bag.
“Are those your relatives?”
“Yep, mom, dad and all my 7 siblings.” Verde beamed proudly before sitting in a chair in the dorm lobby.
“7 siblings!” Gumi couldn’t believe his ears. He couldn’t wrap his head around it. That was so many. How old were Verde’s parents? And what did they do if they had 8 children.
“4 boys and 4 girls. Mom and dad wanted a huge family. So they have one. I’m the second oldest.” Verde patted the arm rest of chair next to him before pulling out a small photograph from his bag.
“What about your family? Any siblings?”
Gumi sat down, still stunned how such huge families could exist. Are all fauni breeding like bunnies? Or was it just snakes? But asking would be rude… most likely. But Verde was asking about his family and he really didn’t want to talk about it.
“Uhm, what’s that picture? Your family?”
“Yes, look! Mom is as tall as me and the others are shorter.” Verde showed him a picture of a green haired family. Only one person stood out. A woman with long orange-green hair that stood proudly next to Verde, they were in the middle, both towering over other family members. Instead of skin, she had pinkish scales with orange stripes.
“Arley and Dart take mostly after dad and I after mom.” Verde pointed out a trio with snake like eyes but with round pupils, no white to be seen anywhere. They also looked pretty creepy, yet Gumi wasn’t sure why. Maybe the way they smiled.
“Kelly is the third and wants to be a teacher like mom. Amazon inherited our family Claymore and wants to be a Huntress.” Verde grinned but it could be seen he wanted that sword. But Iron tail was so cool, what could top that? Gumi wanted to see it. Needed to see weapon cooler than Iron Tail.
“Pine and Ferny are younger, both wanting to be weapon smiths like dad. But Pine took interest in guns and Ferny in swords.” Verde pointed at two younger children. The girl looked a bit like a book worm with colourful scaly stripes all over her body and the boy had scales instead of hair and a huge maniacal grin. Gumi didn’t know what to think about it all.
“And this is my little sister Myrth. She is the youngest and such a sweetheart!” Verde pointed out a girl in green and gold that was holding on to his pants, shyly looking at the photographer. It looked cute.
“Your dad is a weapon smith?” Gumi looked at Verde with stars in his eyes. It sounded so cool! And now he was kind of envious that Verde had access to cool weapons.
“Yeah, he made weapons for some Hunters and what not. Mom gone to Pharos a long time ago before she decided she wanted to teach and after getting so many kids she is a full time mom and a great one. You should eat her meat loafs. Then you will know what a paradise is.” Gumi noticed how Verde cheered up while talking about his family. It was kind of nice. Maybe he could get out of morning practice if he got Verde in a good mood. Loulou would be amazed and grateful!
“It must be hard to be away from family on Thanksgiving then?” Gumi’s sensitive side showed as he imagined having family so far away. Such a loving huge family as it seemed.
“What’s a Thanksgiving?” Verde looked at Gumi, a bit confused. “Isn’t that board just some random thing?”
Gumi stared and blinked.
“You don’t know what Thanksgiving is?” After Verde’s headshake, Gumi believed him. How couldn’t he? Verde must have worked so hard to take care of his siblings…
“If it's a human holiday, snakes don’t celebrate most of them.” Verde interrupted his frantic fantasying.
“And what do you celebrate?”
“Most of our holidays are related to sun cycles. Since snakes are cold blooded.” Verde relaxed in his chair but noticed Gumi getting jittery. He shook his head and stood up.
“I will tell you on the way to our room if you don’t mind.” Years of observing his diverse siblings made him notice things about people he cared about. And those who caught his attention. Otherwise he was ignorant to others. And romance. That was something he ignored completely.
Grinning Gumi jumped on his feet, amazed he managed to sit for so long. But a short walk sounded great. And he wanted to hear about the Snake Holidays! And probably get away from Verdes hair ruffles.
“So, what holidays do you celebrate?”
“Hm… the Longest day of the year, the Shortest day, the Beginning of Summer and Winter, the Monsoon day and a weeklong celebration of the end of Winter. Those are Snake only holidays, but we took a few human ones too.” Verde smiled, his steps echoing in empty hallways on their way to the room. Gumi skipped along without troubles, following the long strides of his team leader.
“Hm… makes sense, but what is this Monsoon day? And how do you celebrate the end of Winter?” It was interesting to learn something new, something nobody else than a snake faunus could tell him.
“That one came from the desert snake fauni, if I remember right.” Verde frowned, trying to remember an explanation his mother gave him. She was a pretty good teacher when it came to teaching her kids.
“It celebrates rain and the day of celebration moves. We always get a call from our relatives about when to celebrate. Normally we would have a feast and then go hunting. The whole family. But since Darth and Arley are musicians, we have to keep them home. They tended to play trumpets and scared everything away.” Verde made a face and then grinned at that fond memory.
“Hunt? But nobody in your family is a Hunter, right?”
“Well, we would just hunt down a normal animal. Before, they were sacrificed to Snake and Rain gods for a good harvest and hunts. But now we would capture the animal alive and then, after taking few pictures, let it go.” Verde shrugged. For him it was normal.
Gumi on the other hand started to hum one well known song. It was Verde's fault.
“And Winter end is celebrated mostly with family visiting and cleaning the house, taking out warm clothes and all that. And trying to discover where our family member left their shedded skin. It’s like a huge scavenger hunt.”
At that information Gumi stopped and looked at Verde. He was dead serious. And Gumi believed him. He had to look for Verdes scaled skin at end of the Winter! Sounds awesome!
