Edaphodon was a giant chimera (also known variously as ratfish, spookfish or rabbitfish among others), which lived during the Cretaceous, outlived the dinosaurs, and was probably still roaming the abyss when our hominin ancestors were starting out. At least one species reached a size comparable to today's great white shark. One of the strangest looking sea monsters, no doubt!

Thanks to for letting me know about this awesome fish!

This is an epic picture and an epicer animal. Although I would like to know exactly which species of Edaphodon was that ginormous.

Chimera already have really unsettling faces, thinking one this big could have ever loomed in the darkness makes me uneasy. Uneasy in a good way, but still, uneasy

If they managed to survive the KT Extinction and lived up to the days of Early man, think there's a chance that there might be a few still swimming around today, I mean it has a better shot than Megalodon or some Mesozoic sea reptiles like Mosasaur, I mean at least this thing wouldn't be eating the last of the whales....or eating people's wives to be with a side of Pteranodon

Yea, imagine a rover diving deep down, expecting to find some octopi, sea lilies,sixgills...

When suddenly...

This guy drifts in like a ghost, almost motionless.

The scientists are in awe of the fish.

And then the internet is full of guys saying "meglodan stile liv coz kimeray"

Fucking mermaids have a better shot at existing in our oceans than a 60-70ft apex predator someone would have saw by now

That would be a great thing to see on the news, giant prehistoric rabbit fish discovered alive after several million years, getting tired of people getting shot and and shit

If they were still alive at that time, how did they go extinct? Or are they still alive today...

They are, but not that big. The ones that are alive today only grow up to a length of around 2 feet, 5 tops.

The new Megalodon?

tobyv23 In reply to HodariNundu [2017-07-20 05:55:44 +0000 UTC]

I don't think Megalodon looked like that. The chimera is also commonly referred to as the Elephant fish or the Ghost Shark.

And speaking of the Megalodon, and I'm so sorry I keep asking you this, but you should do more sketches of him more often, since they look so realistic and I hate to admit it, but I'm a Megalodon fanboy.

tobyv23 In reply to HodariNundu [2017-07-20 06:01:53 +0000 UTC]

*chuckles* What? If you thought Megalodon looked like a giant chimera, then how come every sketch of him from you is depicting him as a giant great white shark?

HodariNundu In reply to tobyv23 [2017-07-20 06:03:22 +0000 UTC]

I was being sarcastic. I found it ludicrous that you thought I was somehow implying Megalodon looked anything like this. I honestly don´t understand people sometimes...
