Wounded as it tried to take a bite out of a great Qarmoutus, a basilosaur is forced to spit it out.
Qarmoutus was a giant catfish whose remains were found in Egypt; it lived during the Eocene along with Basilosaurus and Dorudon, and probably was preyed upon by both with some frequency. It seemingly belonged to the Ariidae family, which today includes marine catfish found in shallow, warm waters, and often protected by venomous spines on their dorsal and pectoral fins. At about 2 meters long, it was bigger than a man, but amazingly not the largest catfish of all times.

I am pretty sure this guy wasn't the only giant catfish in Africa.I Guess even spinosaurids feasted in giant catfish and cyprinid relatives

Of course not. Even today there's many species of potentially giant catfish. Who knows what spectacular things lived in prehistory.

Its interesting to hear of the less well known prehistoric creatures, such as Qarmoutus.

Incidentally, what would the biggest catfish of all time be? I've heard both the wels and the Mekong river catfish referred to as the biggest. Is one of them the biggest catfish, or does that title go to some even bigger prehistoric one?

MviluUatusun [2017-03-11 12:16:59 +0000 UTC]

That's true.  The Mekong catfish is over 3 meters in length and is the largest LIVING catfish.  I'm betting there were even larger ones in prehistoric times.

Yep, the biggest catfish ever is the Mekong river catfish, which is alive today.

Is it the Mekong river catfish that's the biggest? I've heard other claims that the biggest catfish is the wels.

ElSqiubbonator In reply to Tarturus [2017-03-11 23:20:06 +0000 UTC]

The Mekong is the heaviest, but the wels is the longest.

Sorry for the Necrobump, but the Wels isn't necessarily the longest, AFAIK. While we have various reports about 3m long Wels individuals,- and some, extremely unlikely 5m stories- the biggest caught one was around 2,8m. The largest Mekong Catfish was not even 10cm shorter, and again, it has reports of 3m.
The Piraiba is seemingly even larger, with up to 3,6m. Not sure how trustworthy this lenght is, tho.

The fact that today they're not even allowed to grow must also be taken into account.
