The composition of this is really nicely done. I love the 'scribbled' lines as well, they add to the drawing.

Scribbling is what I'm best at! I think the problem is finding a balance between scribbles and lines with a direction that are making contours and edges.
That probably didn't make sense at all!

It makes sense. <3 You are definitely very good at showing the form with the scribbles.

Thanks - it is nice to hear that I have made something realistic out of a lot of scribbling!

I usually like drawing for being neat, but I love this one for the completely opposite reason! I love how you did sideburns , hair and eyebrows with a sharpie. It all looks very "postery", it's not like the other boring portraits

This picture is really amazing. I love how you created the 3dimensional effect with those dark shadows ^^
(I think the shadow on the upper lip could be a bit darker though)

Thanks!
The upper lip isn't quite right - it needs something but I think if you just made it darker the rest of the face would look odd by comparison. Just one of those things to think about afterwards and try and do better next time!

Nice soft values and overall features, but maybe be a little more detailed with the hatch shading.

I'm not up on your actual art terms as I studied science, but I think that is just your basic scribbling rather than hatching.
Something more careful would probably be easier on peoples eyes but I like the point in a picture where you drag something recognisable out of chaos. So I guess I will stick to that for selfish reasons!
Thank you for your comments anyway!

Thanks! I like the things that you can do with pens - but mostly I'm too lazy to do careful shading. So I always have a lot of respect for people who can do nice things with pencil and charcoal like yourself!

Much appreciated. I'm so obsessed with realism at the moment that sometimes I would like to let go and see where the pen takes me such as yourself. Pen drawings are difficult and you've obviously mastered them.

HeavenhairSixes In reply to Sabrina-O [2012-05-30 20:43:14 +0000 UTC]
Pen drawings ain't so difficult. I think the trick is to keep the big picture fixed in your head from the start and actually have a little discipline. If you just start scribbling you generally end up trying to put in too many levels of shade and tone and detail and you can easily end up with a fairly solid and undifferentiated mass of linework.
So for me I think you need to be fairly clear on the features that are important enough to describe quite boldly and the places where you can go go wild and the bits that you are going to leave clear for balance and the bits in between where you can just use a few strokes to describe contours or textures.
And if you muck about a little you soon find that you can suggest contours and textures just by varying the width or direction of your lines and how they relate to each other, even though that is a huge jump from trying to represent things realistically and as they actually appear.
I think I rambled a bit more than I intended there, but maybe it might make some sense!

The grey DEFinately made the face a lot softer compared to the WIP.

Yeah, I had been taking a look and I couldn't help but notice that you seem to like much of the same music as me! I do love your work. It is wonderfully moody - I have been trying to think of a more eloquent description but I am stuck. And thank you for your kind words!

It was quite easy! But only after a lot of practice, same as anything I guess...
And thank you. I didn't intend any disrespect to you in your thread by the way. I knew what you meant (I think). I generally don't intend things that I post seriously. I just felt there was a point, of sorts, to be made...

If you have a go the thing that I would say is most important is to avoid drawing the outlines of things, like in line art. If you look at the nose and the mouth and the edge of the face you can probably see that I have tried to make the shapes by scribbling around them rather than just drawing them in.
If you start combining line art and scribbling it sort of ruins the effect and just makes it look like a mess!
I enjoyed looking at your gallery, by the way. You make plenty of stuff look easy that I would struggle with!

I recognize him. I used to listen to The Smiths very often about twenty years ago. He has a special melancholic expression on his face. You have drawn that in a nice way. Perhaps the shadowing with the pen strokes is a bit too bold.

I was going for a quite stark high-contrast effect. But you try things and you see how they look and you learn from hindsight. Or at least I do!
