A faint smile twists the corners of her mouth upward into a smile and soft green eyes watch the hazy golden sun dip below the horizon. Her tail curls neatly over her white-toed paws, her posture relaxed.

“Mama…”

Turning at the sound of her name, Shasta dips her head in greeting. “Hello, Kite.”

Padding forward, the small grey tom drops down beside his mother. He turns his head to stare up at her, his sea-green eyes wide. Had he lived, he would be nearly an adult now, but in Eden the too-young spirit has not aged. He could have, perhaps, if he had wanted to… Shasta bends her neck to rasp her tongue across the top of his head, directly between his ears.

“Do you miss them?”

Startled by the question, the she-cat smiles ruefully down at her son. She doesn’t need to ask who he’s talking about, has seen the way he watches them wistfully. If only he could have lived a longer, more fulfilling life... “Of course I do. I miss Sparrow, and Junco, and Wren very much.” Pausing, Shasta reaches out and tugs Kite closer, nestled beside her like a small bird with its mother. “I miss Farox, Cress, Caspia, Campion, and Camellia, too.”

Turning her gaze back to the sinking sun, the she-cat mulls over her next sentence carefully. Even in death, she must act as a mother, must find the appropriate response. She had failed to save his life; the least she can do is protect his heart. ”I’m sure they miss us, too, but separation is only temporary. For now we must watch over them, offer the comfort of our presence even when they don’t know it. When the time has come for each of them to join Eden, we’ll be waiting.” Shasta inhales a breath and peers down at her son, their gazes locking. “Death does not stop love, Kite, it merely tests it.”
