Twilight's mom, apparently somewhat inspired by G1 Twilight. I was going to speculate on whether Twilight's parents were nobles (they did get a princess for a foal sitter, and Twilight's childhood bedroom certainly looked impressive) but I suppose it's a moot point now that both of her children have the Prince/Princess title. Their neighbors have to be sick of hearing about how they have to head to the castle for one of their kids' coronations and such.Related content

Twilight's parents look a bit glamorous in these pictures, and I think it's a nice touch.Β Sort of like looking at pictures of your own parents, from before you were born, and realizing that they were these (comparatively) dashing people with exciting lives.Β And that they (mostly) gave that up to become steady, responsible providers and limit-setters and teachers of thing you can'tΒ learn inΒ school.Β In short, parents.
(Not that the two are entirely mutually exclusive, but there are only so many hour in the day...)

I have a question please, if you don't mind answering. What did you do to make the figure (in this case, Twilight Velvet) stand out from the background? I've been dying to do a picture that "stands off the page" for ages and just don't know how.Β

It wouldn't surprise me if you're right about the bragging. I bet the neighbors wish Twilight would turn her into Mina a potted plant again.
In all seriousness, she looks like quite the sweet broodmare, and at least here she looks proud but not boastful. I think she's really happy for her kids, though perhaps a bit sad that they have to live so far away. If deep down she thinks that Equestria is much better now because her children are in high places then I can give her that much.

I actually think that she's a somewhat sad figure, as she kind of gave up both of her kids to the betterment of Equestria. Β Everyone focuses on Celestia's motherly status in Twilight's life, her eldest was serving Celestia in the military, and both ended up going off to fight insanely powerful figures repeatedly.

Deep down all good parents know that, if they do their job right, their children will become true adults and make their own way in the world. Sure, it's bittersweet, but she knows they're safe and strong. (.. apart from all the evil monsters that keep trying to destroy and devour them. It's a far cry from when Mom and Dad had to check under the bed for monsters every night.)
Oh man, when Cadence and Shining even think about having a foal Twilight Velvet will plant herself in the Crystal Empire and pester them worse than King Sombra. She'll make them chocolate treats and sunflower 'n saffron smoothies every day. Her life savings will be spent getting Barry Chrome and Bill Withers* to come sing for the couple. Then loudly (and all too obviously) she'll say how she's going to bed early, with earplugs in, and how she's so tired that no amount of noise could possibly wake her...

Β In the background, on the walls of the family's home, are writing awards apparently for Daring Do. Β The Hasbro blindbag figure of her previously had stated that she was a writer of adventure stories.

I've never watched that original movie, I admit.Β I saw a bit of the movie that the comic was recently referencing, with the bees and the sunstone and all, and that was hard to sit through.Β Still, I do like the idea of working the G1 ponies in there, or at least giving them nods.

Lovely - the family resemblance is definitely there, yet at the same time she's obviously a different pony. I also like how you made her look older without making her look old.

It's an interesting question, though. My personal take on it - and this is obviously just speculation that does not even rise to the level of headcanon - is that Cadance only became Twilight's foalsitter after the latter had been accepted by Princess Celestia as her personal protΓ©gΓ©. Technically, I think Shining Armor's also just a prince consort, not a prince proper - although who knows how they do it in Equestria.

It certainly makes the most sense that Cadance became Twilight's foalsitter *after* Twilight became Celestia's student...Β I've always wondered whether the lack of a cutie mark on Twilight in those flashback scenes was intentional, or just an error.Β Either way, people have taken it as canon that Cadance was looking after her prior to her entrance exam at Celestia's school.
As for Shining Armor, I believe they introduced him as "Prince Shining Armor" to the Crystal Ponies last year, and the tourist from "Games Ponies Play" called him a prince as well, so I guess they don't quibble over titles with the consort idea.
