Description EDIT: Touch-ups applied on 9/13/2015

More or rather scraps material, but I wanted to share because the anatomy came out unusually good. I didn't use refs or anything. O o However, that's just my personal opinion. If you see any outstanding issues, I want to know about them. Are the legs/arms too long? Head too small? Face look wonky? Etc? I need help. I understand that the way I draw is tad stylized compared to real life figures, but if something just plain bugs you, tell me please. <3

Started out as just a sketch to play with his design... again. I realized that I'm making him more and more traditional-looking with each concept. I seemed to have done away with the low-cut briefs, shortened his cape, and refrained from using my stylized S shield (fav.me/d2v66ax ). Boots have practically no weight to them now, and the colors are back to retina-burning status. ;D I kept the belt though. I never liked that circular buckle he normally has. And HEY. POCKETS. Genius.

You know, I can draw that S shield without references. That's how much I draw him. Dx I'm mortified by my fixation of Supes. You're not the only one.

I need to start a comic STAT so I can get tired of drawing him. This is just plain ridiculous.

I should chalk out a Batman design next time instead. Or... tell me who I should draw in a comment. xD

I actually like the traditional design, certainly far more than the modern design in Man of Steel which is way too dark and gritty for my tastes.

You know what I love most about this design? You gave the big man some pockets. He's been needing those for a while now. Frankly, if you REALLY like the more "classic" design, then that's about the biggest change this needs. Sure it's a dated look. But it suits him. Unless you try to make him dark, or edgy, or cool, but then that was never the point, eh?

SailorQuaoar [2011-09-05 23:48:30 +0000 UTC]

Superman's look is fine, and he's had the same design for like 70 years. it doesn't need any major overhauls...I like what you did here.
As a DC fan, what's your opinion on his DCnU redesign?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Harseik In reply to SailorQuaoar [2011-09-06 15:55:50 +0000 UTC]

To be honest, I'm not loving it. Although I am retaining some hope for the Grant Morisson version (the t-shirt and cape one... LOL), because hey, I trust the guy to be a great storyteller, so the costume will most likely fit well within whatever kind of Clark Kent he's going for (let's face it, Supes was never supposed to emulate 'cool'). His JLA costume however is the most problematic one for me, and I swear it's not just because of the briefs being gone. xD Why he's wearing armor I have no idea. The streamline sneaker-boots lack the right impression for his character, as does the "pompous" high collar v-neck and diamond cut sleeves, which makes him come across as more of a Justice "Lord" than a personable superhero. Unless they're opting to lean the character's behavior toward the modernized angelic demi-god mindset that would suit such a regal uniform, the New 52 design was definitely the wrong way to go.

Jim Lee is a fantastic artist, but short in vision on the design department...

Thank you so much for stopping by, friend. :]

I agree. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Nobody wanted a massive revamp of the characters, and I don't even know what it's supposed to change. And what does Superman need armor for anyway? He's invincible. I'm afraid this is going to be the 90s all over again..D:

I really like how realistic your Superman's build is, He seems like you could hide his heroic physique under an oversized suit(ie Clark Kent). As opposed to much of comic book illustration where he is far too hugely muscular to be anything other than Superman. Your Batman could use a little bulking up though, because unlike Supes here his strength is dependant on his physical mass. He needs to be big enough that it's believable he could trade punches with Superman, which he does every now and again. Other than that minor gripe your gallery is nothing short of amazing. Exellent work!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Harseik In reply to berost [2011-08-22 09:35:59 +0000 UTC]

Weird, a friend and I were discussing this whole bulk thing today. :]

Too much mass tends to be a bad thing for a guy who jumps around on rooftops like a professional parkour stuntman and possesses athletic prowess rivaling professionals. In my personal opinion, giving the Dark Knight unnecessary muscle definition would only tend to slow him down. Athletes are built slimmer than body-builders because of that idea. Also, I tend to draw my own versions of DC characters, rather than imitate the comics. My version of Batman relies more on swift movement and martial arts instead of brute strength - mostly anyway.

But referring to the comics versions, since Batman is the pinnacle of the "human" condition, him being able to trade punches with Superman (without the aid of Kryptonite, mechanical suits, etc) is somewhat improbable. Superman is impervious to bullets, rockets, and can survive planetary explosions, but is unable to take a punch from a human, despite their strength?

Anyway, those are my humble reasonings and opinions. Thanks a ton for stopping by, and for the nice comment. C:

berost In reply to Harseik [2011-08-22 21:11:44 +0000 UTC]

By bulk I was refering to overall size, so any increase in muscular mass would be accompanied by proportional height, so as to keep the distribution even. I cannot explain how Batman dukes it out with Supes but he seems to do it with some success. I don't know I'm just somewhat accustomed to a very large Batman and He's been getting steadily smaller over the years so I'm kind of already biased. All that aside you are still an amazing artist and your Superman is one of the best I've seen.

I like the relaxed, confident look of Supes here. Well done. His emblem is impeccable.

Read on if you would like more of my opinion:
His right knuckles(our left) seem to be a shade too low, as compared to his left, but perspective will let you get away with that.

I think his left knee needs some more definition. His right leg is not badly drawn, but it looks to be from a lower point of view. If I may make a suggestion, lower his right knee, and reposition his foot. I don't believe his legs are too long, adjusting the knee height will reduce that impression.

Let me know if you found this helpful

Oh! It has been. Thank you very much. I need to watch where I'm placing joints. They're always coming out crooked. I'll definitely keep what you said in mind, AlAyos. <3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AlAyos In reply to Harseik [2011-06-06 07:36:35 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. There is a very boring way to help in placing joints correctly, and it involves perspective grids. Great for static type poses. But who wants to make grids every time they draw? If you feel you need to go there, try it out.

Harseik In reply to AlAyos [2011-06-06 18:10:31 +0000 UTC]

Ooo, grids are frightening, but I'll try my hand at a simplistic version of one. I won't get anywhere if I don't practice that stuff. Have a swell day! <3

I would love it if you would draw any of the Green Lanterns. I stopped reading comics for ages until one day a few years ago when i picked up a copy of Geoff Johns "Green Lantern: Rebirth." After that i was hooked on GL, and eventually got back into comics. geoff Johns kept producing quality stuff like "The Sinestro Corps War", "Blackest Night, and "Brightest Day"(though Brightest Day isn't really a Gl story, more like a follow up to Blackest Night). so i have slowly started getting back into comics. anyway, if you would draw any of the Green Lanterns, that would be great.

I don't see any issues here. Everything looks beautiful and proportionate. His features are clear and clean.
I can't even draw that damn shield when I have a picture right in front of me and, no, I'm not kidding. I wish I was but that shield is beyond me for whatever reason. Kudos to you for managing it.

I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of Mr. Dark and Broody. He needs more love these days, I think. You have a very short supply of anything Flash, though.

Drawing someone you rarely sketch might be more of a challenge, which is a good thing for any artist. I try to recommend drawing people the artist usually doesn't draw/ignores/avoids. Normally, it takes more practice and research to get to a level they like. That, if it doesn't frustrate the hell out of them, gives them a chance to test out more techniques and styles they might otherwise have been wary of trying on well developed characters. When you go back to drawing Superman after that, you will be able to bring anything new to the table and have a fresh look at a design you feel you are fixating on.

Now that I have talked your ear off--sketch on, my friend, sketch on.
