Description Ookubi (大首): Ookubi are giant severed heads of women or men with blackened teeth which appear in the sky but sometime also hide in the storage houses. They are harmless but seeing one can be a sign of bad omens or coming disasters like earthquake, storm, fire or war. The story behind this yokai is mysterious and unknown.

Blacking the teeth was something the royal family members did back in the day in Japan. If i m not mistaking, but idk why they do that. Its just a fascinating country with rich culture, and i may be a little jerk but i kinda like the times of the samurai, and how they use to structure society. I mean i know it was horrible for the regular person If it was not a samurai. Life must have been hard, but everyone knew his or her place.

Yes! That practice is quite popular in Heian to early Edo period. Actually, I want to dye my teeth black once. If I find that blackening material, I will try it XD
I think life in the past is hard but...life in nowadays is also hard for somebody. Many people lose their land because of the wars, etc...I think nothing changes much.

Don't You have to find someone professional to dye your teeth. Idk it is possible to do it by yourself? Once i tried to pierce my ear all by myself, and the end result was a mess! But i think You would look cool with teeth like that. Royal Hallowie!

Actually, there is no need. The material is made from iron oxide mixed with herbal oil, etc... You can put it on your teeth and it stays only 2-4 days (which is good since I don't want to get black teeth when I'm working in the office or talking to the customers XD) But the problem is...it seems nowadays it's quite difficult to find in Japan. I will ask my friend get one for me when he find it by next visit.

I know how you feel about piercing by yourself. (T.T) I've done once in middle school as well and used to have 7 holes but now I wear only 2. It was quite painful and mine were inflamed for years until I took the earrings out and let the wounds heal back. Miracle was there were no holes or scars left after that. Then I went to tattoo/piercing shop to let the professional do.

We called this "Pontianak" in Malaysia and she is a female vampiric ghost who seeks virgin or young female or sometime males for youth and beauty. The individual will detach the body and head late night and her head flies around its vicinity to seek the victims. She will suck their blood and devour the organs. She will fly back to her body reattach back to full body without her knowing before the sun rise. Definitely a yokai cannot mess with.

Wow! Thank you very much for this interesting story. (*o*)
I've heard once before too but from locals in Thailand. There is a monster (actually it's ex-human with heavy sin or used to practiced black magic) whose head will come off and fly to seek foods; rotten meat, organs etc...in the late night. They call it, "Krasue". In Japan, there is one which is much similar to Pontianak and Krasue. It's called "Nuke-kubi". I'll draw it and write the story soon when I come back from my vacation.
