Description Love me a bit of anime, as some of my older friends should remember, so I fancied drawing one of my all-time fave manga/anime characters, adorable cyborg bounty hunter Gally, star of Yukito Kishiro's awesome Gunnm, aka Battle Angel Alita.  Discovered as a discarded chunk of scrap in a post-apocalyptic dystopian junk world by cyber-scientist Daisuke Ido, she awoke with no memory, at least until an encounter with murderous monster cyborgs triggered long-buried combat programming, namely the devastating "Panzer Kunst" martial arts style that renders her tiny, seemingly fragile cyborg form into an unstoppable fighting machine.  Following surrogate father figure Ido into his day job as a bounty hunter, she made great use of these awesome talents ... but the thing I always really liked about her was her core personality, always so sweet, innocent, and endlessly curious.  Kind of like a Miyazaki heroine reborn in a Ghost in the Shell body.

That was what I wanted to capture in this piece, that angelic adorability, the idea that, in spite of her massive destructive potential, she was inherently capable of such innocent grace and beauty.  Of course it led me to tackle one hell of a challenging pose, and even the end reslt wasn't QUITE devoid of clunkiness (the hands still need some work), but for the most part I'm REALLY pleased with the current final results - reckon this is one of my most successful renditions to date.  And I think I've done a pretty good job of capturing the intriguing paradox at the heart of the character.

Gally/Gunnm was created by Yukito Kishiro, and are property of VIZ Media/Shueisha Inc./Hitotsubashi Group.

It is SOOOOO overlooked ... I'm hoping when Jim Cameron finally finishes the Avatar sequels and gets going on his long-gestating adaptation it'll finally get its renaissance.  In the meantime ...

In the meantime, I'll keep watching it over and over. I also need to get the full run of the series...

I've just started getting into Planetes myself.  I've been wanting to check it out for a dog's age, it's come ridiculously highly recommended.  I also just recently checked out Psycho-Pass season 1 - that was some dark, intense and edgy stuff, and being a Ghost in the Shell fan it definitely pressed all the right cyberpunk buttons for me.  I plan on having a look at Attack On Titan soon as well.

Thanks.  I'm still not too sold on the hands, but the overall I'm REALLY pleased with.  I had a lot of fun with it.

Nice work on this. Tragically overlooked these days is Alita/Gunnm. Needs a DVD reissue stat. And some proper omnibus editions of the manga.

I agree totally with your read on Alita. That combination of terrifying destructive power and youthful spirit is what makes her so memorable to me.

I recently tracked it down and rewatched it on YouTube.  Got me all revved up for this piece.  So good, and I'd forgotten how impressive the animation was for the time.  It'll be pretty sweet too if James Cameron finally gets to fulfill his dream of adapting it once he's finished the Avatar sequels - I think that would be CLASS.

Definitely.  She's totally one of my fave kinds of action heroine because of that.  Like an adorable little cyborg River Tam ...
