Mann-of-LaMancha [2014-02-14 17:16:44 +0000 UTC]
I'm rather fascinated by the shadow for some reason. At first I suspected you lay the model down, reclined, and intersected it wit a flat plane then erased everything until an outline remained. However, then I considered that you exported a 2D view of it, doctored it up with your favorite digital drawing program, then imported it back to SU and applied the image as a texture on the floor.
In any event, reversing the polarity makes the detail stand out more.
I presume if you turned off the lines, then details were lost? You might try turning off the lines, and going with two or three different shades of blue. I refer to this as man-handling the textures, it helps to emphasize the details. What you do is apply the lightest shade of blue to all "front" faces for instance. A mid-tone shade could be used on the bevels, while the "sides" get the darker shade of blue (likewise for white and gray).
Man-handling the textures thus, allows the crisp edges of the details to stand out while you turn off the linework which makes it seem more realistic without using a rendering program.
It helps if the hues of blue (or whatever color) are similar so it's the same hue, but a darker shade. That all depends on the intensity of the shadows you use too.
...Just a suggestion.
Very nice detail work or what I call techno-babble. I won't harp on the logistics of some points as it seems others have discussed this already.

Mann-of-LaMancha, how do you do? For the shadow, if I remember correctly, it was just a simple procedure in Sketchup & or Photoshop.
I just turned on shadows in Sketchup and made a flat ground to it stand on top. I think the shadow was put on separate layer in Photoshop. But this was awhile ago so, I might be wrong...
BTW, thank you for comment.

maybe its cause I'm lazy but, I wouldn't be able to draw that even if my life depended on it.

bad news! Sketchup work better in Nvidia, and I use ATI Radeon. I didn't know if my vga card support open GL.

Looks nice. Since the arms aren't being used for anything on this model, why not attach large missile packs in the place of the arms?
BTW, have you considered trying Blender 3D?

Yes I have considered attachments for that area but I just wanted to keep the look of this shape. Yeah actually I just DL'd blender recently (very complicated interface) and got my model to export to it once. But I can't seem to do it anymore, it doesn't export correctly. :C

Man, this is awesome, grid-gunner. I need to do a lot more these days...
Is Sketchup7 hard to learn at all? Because it seems you've mastered it quite well.

grid-gunner In reply to PlasmaFire3000 [2009-07-02 00:45:23 +0000 UTC]
Not at all, it is very easy and thats pretty much the reason why I am using it. However I'm still trying to figure out how to do more complicated curved shapes. Its a free ap and you can then render your sketchup model with another free ap called Kerkythea. BTW thanks!
