Description This image is an excerpt from one of my sporadically worked-on comics. This is an enclosed asteroid city, a corporate headquarter circling Earth.

This was done in some six hours or so, using the development version of GIMP (version 2.3.14) which I decided to compile and run today. Was fun to do. Problem is of course that an image like this is never done -- you can continue to add details infinitely.

As it is I might update this a bit in the future depending on comments. Critique is, as always, greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Minor adjustment; making the lights fade better into the distance. /EDIT

There is a tutorial on creating this image here: [link]

Yes, this is an old image by now. It worked well as a tutorial though. If I made it today I'd probably spend more time and add more details to the buildings, just as you point out; I bet one could go into quite some detail without distracting from the earthrise too ...
I'm glad to hear you found the tutorial(s) useful; you are certainly among those who have made the most out of them!

Really?

Thank you.
I mean, I don't know if you mean I've learned a lot from them, or I've improved a lot with them, but thanks. That means a lot.

Ah, if I remember correctly, this was the first tutorial of your's that I successfully finished. A bit lacking in detail in places, but I think too many details in the city would distract from the beautiful Earthrise. Thanks again for the tutorials. I don't think I could have gotten a better start in digital art.

Not sure is it because of your technique or the chosen colors (I'm just an amateur) but this artwork reminds me so much about those cover art of old Sci-Fi novels back in 60's. My dad has quite a collection of those.
I really like this one

Griatch-art In reply to MrHoot [2011-01-09 11:25:22 +0000 UTC]

Yes I can see what you mean. I think it's the subject matter rather than the colouration since those 60's covers often had much clearer primary colours (due to printing press limitations of the time), but they really did like big spacey vistas like this one. Thanks for the comment and the fave!

This is a pretty old image by now, and looking at it now I would probably have done it differently had I done it today. But that's just me as the artist talking, I guess - it's fun that people still appreciate it!

Are the dots on the darker parts of the moon intentional? Aside from that, this is very good, nice feel, very good detail. The reflections off of the flat surfaces do kind of give a 'soft' feeling. Not sure if metal is supposed to do that(and I kind of assume that it is metal, seeing as its part of multiple buildings 0.o).

Aside from that I love it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Griatch-art In reply to Kelmar-Regane [2009-02-19 14:00:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm not sure what dots you are referring to though? With 'moon', do you mean the planet in the background or the asteroid city itself?
As for the soft feeling, you are correct that metal generally don't do that in clean air. The asteroid city is however intended to have an atmosphere, which is seen also in the blurring and textures in the more distant buildings. If there are lots of particles in the air (and/or it moves with rising heat), you get a diffusion of light which tends to blur it. I guess the weird earthglow also changes how it looks. That's the idea anyway. If one did a city in space one certainly had to stick to much "harder" reflections though for sure, it's a good point. Thanks again for the comment, I always appreciate feedback. Also thanks for the fave!

Yes, the planet sorry, I looked at it and though 'Moon!'
And I think maybe the dots could be something with my monitor. But anyway, I see them in the slighty darker area on the planet just above the buildings. They seem to be mostly located at that one spot just above the buildings, well, technically I suppose its a few hundred miles away at bare minimum.
But, that isn't the point.

Anyhow, your welcome for the fave. And thanks for letting me know why Dallas is so misty all the time

Griatch-art In reply to Kelmar-Regane [2009-02-19 16:03:36 +0000 UTC]

I don't really see any dark dots, there are some structure in the clouds though manifesting as brighter dots, maybe different monitors show this differently.

Hello. I am a University student doing a project on digital art. It's going to be a blog talking about a few programs etc for photo manipulation and online publishing. Im going to cover Gimp briefly and I was wondering if I could have your permission to use this image. You will get credit for the work and I will provide a link to this page of course. Also, I won't be getting anything other than a good grade (I hope...) out of this project. I will not be selling the image or anything like that. I would really appreciate it if I could use this image though, it really fits my presentation.

Griatch-art In reply to ghost-of-freedom [2009-01-30 12:27:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for asking. Yes, you are most welcome to use the Asteroid City in your presentation as long as proper credits are given.
Also, if your blog becomes available online, it would be fun to see the result!

Good luck with that grade!

This was made as a background for a comic page -- so there is actually text frames in it. Hence I will not be making a more detailed version of it at this time. Anyway, if you want to see more details on how it was done, I have done a detailed tutorial on it (link in my journal).

Glad you liked it!

Thanks, glad you like it! The Egypt reference is cool, hadn't thought of that but I guess you have a point with all those monolithic buildings. I can recommend GIMP, it's a very powerful program.

Great picture! I especially like how the fog goes across the city and the city fades out nicely. I also like how you put the detailed focus on the stuff which is near the bottom and then the detail gradually reduces when you move on to the distance.

Great job!

Excuse the moment of immaturity. I promise right afterwards I'll put something intelligent.

HOLY FLAMING CHICKENS OF DOOM! You made this one GIMP?! I can barely edit pictures on GIMP much less actually produce something. Then again, I haven't given it much time and I have a hard time with the interface. ^_^()
It's so incredible and so gorgeous!

I love the soft, glow/fog feel of it. It reminds me a lot of one of the covers of Flight, which is also simply gorgeous.

I do see what Gaeva's talking about, but I kind of like it vague like this, sort of toy buildings out of clay. A city like this out in space on a lifeless, almost completely inorganic (I'm not counting minerals/rocks as organic simply because they don't grow/evolve/live), is sort of like playing in a sandbox except bigger... and more expensive.

What might be nice is a little more detail on the Earth because I thought it was the moon at first glance. Silly me.

@LightLadyD

Thanks for the kind words!
Thanks for the comments too; possibly the Earth should have more details, yes -- but the original of this image is a comic page -- so the previous page makes it quite clear it's the Earth you see; so does the captions that I have removed from the image here. Still it's a good point, worth thinking about, especially when considering this as a stand-alone image.

Thanks again.

LightLadyD In reply to Griatch-art [2007-03-11 01:20:41 +0000 UTC]

No problem. But I still feel that even if its a comic page, it should be a little more evident unless there's some atmospheric things going on to explain the unusually dense cloud coverage.

Oooo! There's some lights that weren't there before on the building in front of the rectangular building that's in front of the giraffe looking building! ... Right? Or am I just seeing things?

Griatch-art In reply to LightLadyD [2007-03-11 07:45:39 +0000 UTC]

I'll look into if it's possible to "enhance" the Earth further so it's easier to see, we'll see. It's a good point.

... and yes, you're seeing things. There has been lights on that building all along.

Wow, this is quite amazing. Not just the art, but also...the creative mind behind it! All those forms, shapes, details, ideas, it's very cool, a visual treat to the eyes ^_^

I do think you vagued up the buildings too quickly though, a few more of them behind the ones "in the front" could have had a bit more detail before having it fade away the further away they are from us. Maybe you did it on purpose though, but it's just a thought.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Griatch-art In reply to VGiselleH [2007-03-04 19:19:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, appreciate hearing that.

Interesting point on the level of detail with distance. I found it very difficult to really judge the distance since I wanted these buildings to be very large. Hence I figured things should "fade" rather quickly. I'll take a second look at it. Thanks for pointing it out!
