Description Anyone else remember Marathon? It was a first-person shooter Bungie made back in the mid-90s, BEFORE they got famous from Halo. It was made for the Macintosh computers, presumably to compete with the popularity of Doom on PCs with DOS and Windows. Three games were made: Marathon (1994,) Marathon 2: Durandal (1995) and Marathon Infinity (1996.) Years later, all three games would be released as freeware and ported to Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. I own all three games for Windows. Marathon had several motifs that would later reappear in Halo, such as AI rampancy and many cryptic references to the number seven. These games are widely considered to be a spiritual prequel to the Halo games, despite taking place in separate fictional universes.

Fun fact: My tagline, "frog blast the vent core!" is a line from Marathon 2: Durandal. It is a nonsense phrase shouted by enemy constructs called "simulacrums" who look like friendly marines, but actually run at you and explode. I guess kind of like the infamous Suicide Grunts from Halo 3 and Halo: Reach.

That game was so cool. Bungie should consider making a modernized remake.

BTW, my friend General-RADIX has been doing a lot to keep the Marathon spirit alive. The only person I've seen doing this much for it.

Cool! And thanks for the fave. Personally, I am stuck on one particular part of the first Marathon game, and have been since I first discovered the games in 2010. It's pretty sad, really.

Still, great game. By the way, I'm a friend of red super nova, I actually know him in real life, We meet a place called round table to play pokemon.

Online is mostly played on Infinity, just to let you know. Never played online, personally, but I'm more into single player campaigns.

Yeah, the Marathon logo and the Tau symbol are pretty much the same thing, but I think it's a coincidence.

Yep, it's free now. What operating system do you use? You have to download Aleph One first, that's the program that enables you to play the Marathon games. But after you follow the instructions on how to install and play the games, then you can enjoy it.

Oh, k Lol! but is it like a game like quake multiplayer or what not? or is it similar to halo.

Great-5 In reply to Pyrotactick [2012-07-22 17:02:16 +0000 UTC]

I'd say it's closest to an old-school Halo. There is no multiplayer as far as I know, sadly.

Yeah that is a bummer. However I think there may have been a few mods or such that enabled multiplayer, but I know nothing about them.

Lol, watch it be like the Just cause 2 multi mod. You got your main character running around this map aimlessly

Great-5 In reply to Pyrotactick [2012-07-26 17:04:00 +0000 UTC]

Running around a map aimlessly? Meh, I hate it when I wanna play an online FPS with people but I end up getting a server with no one on it, and that happens. It happens all the time with Skulltag (a multiplayer online mod of Doom) and it's really disappointing. But then again I suck at most online FPS, they end up making me horribly frustrated and end up screaming at my TV or computer monitor, most of them anyways. Halo on Xbox Live, and Skulltag are both way too difficult for me, with many more skilled players who don't even give me a chance, so it's not even fun to begin with. However the only two online FPS I enjoy playing and am actually good at are Team Fortress 2 and the multiplayer PC port of the original Halo: Combat Evolved. Especially TF2...I never play enough of that game, but the last time I played I got several rampages in a row and it was awesome.

Yeah, I like team games. MW3 was fun at first, then...no....I'll just say no. Now I play MAG. I find it funner despite you can die after five kills almost 80% of the time.
