Description Oil, chalk, charcoal, and pencil on framed drywall.
My fascination with all things aquatic takes center stage here. This is one of two finished pieces executed on drywall. Sheetrock / drywall is a rather lavish and rich drawing surface - it literally takes in pigment, like fresco, but as a dry surface, it is chalk-like, so charcoal and pastel is AMAZING on drywall. No, I didn't "tag" this on an existing wall. Instead, I built this "wall" - made a frame and cut scrap drywall to fit. It is rather like a portable fresco.

This is amazing. I do some work on drywall, too, and have never figured out a good way to frame it. Could you provide some more detailed pointers? I need to be able to hang it, somehow...

First, you'll need some wood - furniture-grade 1" x 2" or 2" x 2" studs or planks should do the trick. In these two images (Abyss and Domestication) I made the frame first (cut the studs to size and nailed them together) and then cut the drywall to the size of the frames - the frame serves as a backing - like a frame that stretches a canvas (If you've ever made your own backing frame and stretched your own canvas for painting, this part should be familar...) I then carefully nailed the drywall to the frame. I suppose you could also used "liquid nails" or Loctite bonding adhesive too...
As far as hanging, the frame provides that additional bonus - if you place a horizontal cross-beam for support through the frame, you can literally hang the frame 9with the drywall attached) on the wall. The top beam of your frame works just as well in this way.

Thanks - amazing how imagery dealing with death can feel "alive", no?

Thanks for the comment... So... "feel"...?

do you mean the:

Texture?
Color Temperature?
Emotive Quality?
Other "feel?"

???

I like how you're encouraging more critical comenting here.
Personally I find the most drawing elemebt of this peice is that it is slightly off balence, the off kilter feel in responce seems to add dynamic. I don't think the full veiw is large enough to really give a full sense of its texture ("domestication" was able to display this better). & I imagine that the contrast is dround out by the soft blue/teal bacground.
This drywall seems like a great idea though.

A little of everything........texture, temp. The esoteric mix that made it appealing to me..... and the fish.
