* Twilight Sparkle's older brother, Shining Armor always dreamed of becoming a member of Celestia's Royal Army, and thus dedicated much of his youth to training himself physically and mentally for the job. He and Twilight nonetheless shared a tight-knit bond, and both were deeply saddened when Shining's acceptance into the Army meant he had to leave home.

* Before joining the Army, Shining befriended a young woman named Cadance, who was the family's go-to babysitter for Twilight. The two grew quite close over the years, but when Shining was enlisted into Celestia's army, he could not find Cadance to say goodbye to. He would eventually learn it was because she had been called back to her true home, and her true identity, as Mi Amore Cadenza, Princess of Cadenza Island, where he was soon stationed as Captain of the Guard.

* Although he is an above-average fighter, Shining's true strength lies in his defensive abilities. His Star Shield has the ability to absorb offensive Magic and re-direct it, and when joined with his Horn Lancer, it can generate a protective force field larger enough to encompass an entire city.

* As Captain of the Guard on Cadenza Island, it is Shining's duty to maintain a powerful Force Field Spell that has been in place on the island for many years. Although ostensibly its purpose is to prevent invaders from overtaking the small and vulnerable Island, Shining is one of the few who knows the secret truth: it is actually meant to keep something sinister on the island from ever escaping into the world....

* Whenever he is on duty or needed in battle, Shining is deadly serious and commanding. Off the battlefield, however, he is more than a little awkward, especially around Cadance. Despite this, he is also earnest and affable, ready and often eager to strike up a conversation or help anyone with a problem.

* In a shocking break from tradition, Shining is the first of non-Royal blood to be chosen to wed a Princess, as he and Cadance are engaged to be wed on Cadenza Island soon.
