Description This is one of my favorites from my shoot in High Wycombe. It was taken in the Old Water Mill Garden and I used the long end of my Sigma 135-400mm lens. I selected the largest aperture that I could to throw as much out of focus as possible and I was right at the limit of minimum focus that I could get with this lens....I really really can't wait until i can get a 200mm @ f2.8...>sigh<
It's worth checking out a full size view because the little bugs are nice and sharp.

Thank you, the focus is very selective here, which was the effect that i was trying to achieve.

The blue spots behind add a lil' edge. I like it.

Thanks, yes the blue and the yellow really work. On the full view, you can see the bug hovering too.

I love how you've got the plant in the front and blurred it. Something like this would normally irritate me, but this just works beautifully. I suppose the flowers are strong enough to take your eye away from the plant in front. Wonderful composition.

Thank you.
In my humble opinion, the differential focussing technique only really works by heavily blurring everything else in the frame but the intended point of focus. That way anything that would normally be a distraction gets ignored because it's so blurred.

Wow. This is such a beautiful photo. The colors are so rich, and I love the dof. You're very talented.

Thanks,
it's as close as I could get with my 135-400mm set to it's minimum focus distance. I think I'll drop a 12mm extension tube into my bag in future!

That would be pretty cool, but I like this too. Get too close and you'd lose all the wonderful indistinct colors in the background.

That's true, but I was only thinking of a few more inches close. The minium focus on my 135-400mm is 2.2m, which isn't very close at all. I recon with a 12mm extension tube I could halve that if I needed to and get even better control of the depth of field by moving closer.

Opps...duhhh! I posted my reply in the wrong spot...

Yeah, but it's taken me years to collect my lens collection. This Sigma lens isn't too expensive (considering it's range) but the camera was really expensive and it's still smarting.
