Description H, HB, 2B & 4B graphite pencils and a Q-Tip.

My brother Ian. He is almost 16 years old and has Down Syndrome. I enjoyed drawing his portrait because there is beauty even in his non-typical face. And there is an innocent soul looking out of his eyes.

Edit: This is the updated scan. It captures the nuances of the original work much more faithfully than the first scan.

Beautiful portrait, beautiful face. Uniqueness is often what makes people pretty, and this guy definately has that charm.

Im a medical student, third year. I completed my Medical Genetics Course and I wanted to thank you for helping raise awareness about people with Down Syndrome. They are also people and they have feelings and can feel just as happy and loved as the rest of us humans. We are all special in our own way and all of us thrive in the same nurturing environment of love and family.

And strangely enough, this work somewhat reminds me of ancient Roman and Greek philosophers. Maybe it's because of the message your work carries. An innocent soul is the greatest treasure.

Give a hug to your brother for me, even though he doesn't need it. Your work proves that he is a very loved member of your family. I wish more people are like you.

I also have a special needs sibling (my sister has a chromosome abnormality called 18q-, along with autism). I've really been wanting to do a portrait of her, but I just haven't gotten around to it. This really inspires me to get going on it!

the detailing and shadowing is superb. I can really see the innocence out of his eyes. I have had a couple of DS kids that I grew up with in high school. they are all innocent and sweet. it's a shame that some people just walk all over them or shew them away like flies. I myself have seen that happen. It's awful. In My eyes everyone is special in their own way. It's the people that disrespect them that get's under my skin.

btw congratulations on Daily Deviation!

Also, he has such soulful eyes; almost like he's looking at something in a completely different way than others around him... like he sees the glory and magic in the things we sometimes miss out on because we're too busy or wound up in our hectic little worlds. I only wish I could see things like he does, like so called "disabled" people do. It sickens me that society passes them over as "different" or, as it so nauseates me to even think of, "stupid," when in reality, these people are far wiser than we'll ever be.

I so much admire men like your brother whom society calls "disabled," but in reality their palpable hearts and indomitable spirits put the majority of us "normal" people to shame. (And by the way, I hate the terms "disabled" and "normal," as neither one exists if you ask me... and I've noted you didn't.)

Give your brother a huge hug from me and thank him for being the utterly awesome dude I know he is.
