Description This is my avatar portrait: a small watercolor painting I did some years ago. The original is in my sister's Chinese-themed room. This scan is kind of poor quality because I didn't remember to scan it until after I'd had it professionally framed...so I scanned it through the glass.

Watercolor on warm-press paper (I think).

Edit: updated scan with mat edges removed.

Yes, Christianity is a multi region religion in cultural scope that's for sure.

There's something about Catholicism and the culture and people China that synergizes so well together.

My Grandparents had an 8 X10 of this mounted on wood and made in China. Our next door neighbor (who escaped China) went to China in the early 70's and brought it back.Β
I'm glad to see this because my uncle, who was not a nice person, had taken it down off the wall and them gotten ride of it so no one in the family could have it.

You have done such a beautiful job!Β Β

Beautiful! It really does look very Chinese! I find it beautiful how Jesus came for all people and all cultures - I really love "contextualised" images of Him. Do you know about the Jesus Mafa picture series? It's a series depicting Jesus as an African. [link]

And a Chinese-themed room sounds like a nice idea!

Thank you for your comment--I think the reference image comes from a traditional Chinese depiction of Our Lady, since Google search turns up statues and holy cards with the same garments and general design.
The concept of making images of Christ and His Mother as being of different races/cultures, is the same concept as the Incarnation itself--God becoming like us to be better understood by us.

And my sister's room was very nifty, with three walls painted gold and one painted red, and everything Asian you could think of for decor.

Its an interesting thing about Mary. If you believe in her apparitions, she has this... lets call it a habit, of appearing as a native of where ever she appears. Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared as an half aztec, half european woman, and IOur Lady of La Vang appeared as aΒ Vietnamese woman, with a little Vietnamese baby Jesus.Β

Thank you. My reference was a holy card (about 1 3/4" by 3") that I'd found in a book somewhere. I had never seen anything quite like it, and copied it as faithfully as I could. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
