I like the stickers!
Maybe you can help me. What would be a good first hand gun? Keeping in mind a complete lack of prior experience...this would be my first gun, period.
Some one suggested a .38 or .38 special, but I've heard that they aren't necessarily the most effective.

Depends on your preference, if you heard that, chances are it was an older gentleman, who is used to revolvers. In reality, it doesn't matter what caliber you get, as long as it is 9mm or above. Nothing is more important than well placed shots, don't let the endless "stopping power" arguments sway your decision.
I have shot everything from Ruger, Beretta, HK, Colt, and now Glock. And I can say with ABSOLUTE certainty, that the Glock will be the best all around choice for any situation. For daily carry I use a Glock 19, but some may choose the 23 in .40S/W instead of 9mm. They are dimensionally identical, compact, easy to conceal.
You might run into some people who will try to sell you a Springfield XD, its pure hype, they are absolute garbage. Its easy to prove, the FBI buys 235,000 Glocks every year, signs dozens of new contracts..the XD has been in public US market for EIGHT YEARS and has yet to sign a significant single contract.

He was an older gentleman, but I was looking more or less specifically at revolvers. Mainly because they seem easier to load. (Also, I read they aren't as 'high matenience')

Look at it this way, the autoloading pistol was developed for a reason, with faster reloads, higher capacity, and more efficient design. Not to mention a Glock has usually 23-27 parts as a whole, less than half as many parts as the average revolver.
What you can read and what you find true are two completely different beasts.
Have a look at this, and I'd challenge you to try that with any revolver.

*shrugs* I don't doubt you. Remember, I have absolutely no previous experience. (and I'm getting two different sets of info whenever I look)
Anyway, thanks for the info.
I'm hoping to get the chance to try (under appropriate supervision, of course) a variety of guns, just to get a feel for them. Maybe I'll find the right gun then.

Find a local indoor range, most of them have programs where you can check out and fire anything you want right there.

*nods* I'll have to look into that. I'm not positive where the nearest one is, now that I think about it.

No, not yet. I get the feeling I'll be shooting my Papa's .22 first, then moving on to a hand gun. Which is fine, but I'd prefer the later, due to size and ease of carry.

I don't think I've ever heard that before. Then again, with my family...probably true.
After all, they're all rednecks.

I thought I did, but I must not have saved it. They only work with the 30-per page address labels. If you have some let me know and I'll type it up!

It used to be my daily carry! Until Glock stepped in and well..you know the rest.
I used to put them everywhere that didn't allow open carry in Idaho. Now I have a new bumper sticker that says "ONLY CROOKED POLITICIANS FEAR ARMED CITIZENS"..pissing off old liberals and democraps..its what I do!

I think my buddy would be interested in some of those stickers... but then he usually just ignores those signs (except in government buildings, anywhere else it's actually not illegal to carry here in MN, they can however ask you to leave and if they choose they can charge you with trespassing.) for the most part from what he tells me.

Nice. I'm getting rather sick of Democrats... and Anarchists, this town is crawling with them. I used to be one but learned the error of my ways.
Not a big fan of old ladies either, lol.

You should see how much they tried (and failed) to heckle us during 2nd Amendment Week. Amazingly OREGONIANS like the College Republicans more than the College Democraps.

I was just reading this article that my buddy posted a link to on facebook. I had to re-post it on there as far too many of my friends are those annoying, protesting, liberal, know-it-all-college-hippie types. [link] It's a good read though if you haven't read it yet.

I have yet to see a SINGLE anti-gun argument that isn't backed by a minimum of 50% ignorance and falsehood. I love how easy it is to piss them off when confronted by facts.

I guess I wouldn't hate them so much if they could logically or reasonably have a debate or even just a talk with me. Instead all I get a snide arrogant comments that aren't backed by a shred of fact!

Sounds like when any Atheist using logic and science to argue against Christians who use... faith, as their arguing point. But then, I'd just rather not get into that whole thing on here, lol.
