Description A small project to keep me entertained while I wait for new wool for a larger project... And an attempted exercise in face-making. I don't really think I succeeded. Personally, I think this little guy looks more like a baboon in capuchin colors...

A couple of things though:
1. I still love watching Pirates of the Caribbean.
2. Many years ago in college, I took a primatology course. One of the most interesting classes I ever took - I highly recommend one to anyone still in school (or just for the fun of it!).

Thank you! This is something called needle-felting: basically it is sculpting wool with special barbed needle into a 3D shape. There really is almost no limit to the things you can make! You should give it a try!!

oh my god, what? oh my god

I love it so much! How big is it? Does it have a wire frame?

GlassCamel In reply to creturfetur [2010-09-04 03:38:16 +0000 UTC]

He's actually pretty big: stretched out, he's 8 inches from head to the tip of his tail. He just looks smaller because of the lankiness (I suppose). Yup, wire frame, it makes him way too much fun to play with!

Impressive! But then all your stuff is pretty darn cool.
Does this one have an armature in it? And how on earth did you get his little fingers and toes to turn out well?

Thanks!
He's felted onto a pipe cleaner skeleton - I'm constantly wrapping him around various piece of furniture.
fingers and toes? I'm not really sure, but I made a tiny Cthulhu years ago and then realized that tentacles look like fingers if they're small enough.

Oh cool! I might not be too fond of monkeys IRL but they're surprisingly fun to felt, yes? Can't wait to see yours and I'm sure he'll be the epitome of felted monkey perfection, as all your work is! XD

Awww thanks so much! Mine is so tiny (had to fit in a walnut shell) so I didn't get to put the detail in that I would have liked to. I love yours, it is so wonderful! Monkeys are tough to felt, all those fingers and toes - Of course that's one of your specialties Keep it up!

Impressive needle felting!!! I love your subjects. This guy is perfect. And I agree - the bloodletting decreases with practice.

Eh heh, yeah, lotta shameless silliness in my gallery.

But it makes me happy (as does not drawing blood!)

I find myself giggling all the time when I'm needle felting. My favorite part is when I have a celebrity that needs to get dressed. Speaking of shameless silliness - I terrorized people at a party with a nude little Donald Trump. My dolls are so flexible and The Donald had some pretty good exotic dancer moves down. They were ready to pay me to put the hilarious yet horrifying thing away.

When I saw the thumbnail my jaw dropped. I do agree that the face isn't very expressive but the pose is very expressive.

Thank you! I think that monkeys might be the fun-est thing to needle-felt around pipe cleaners. He is currently clinging to the edge of a computer monitor and waving XD

but every time I look in his face I say: why so serious? XD Oh well.

lol If you are into comics you should read Y: The Last Man. It's got a spider monkey in it that I love as much as all the other characters.

*pops over to Wikipedia* Oh that monkey looks angry ! D: It looks interesting, with pretty art at the very least, I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the rec!

And Yorick (the man) does not? lol It's probably on of the issues where they are in mortal danger.

(I wonder what immortal danger is like...Is it much more serious?)

GlassCamel In reply to raeraethejetplane [2010-01-13 18:23:38 +0000 UTC]

hmm, since mortal danger = death, then I suppose that immortal danger = the opposite (so something very pleasant?) XD

Aww, needle-felted capuchin in its natural habitat: a house plant. You should make an alternate zombie head for it, like Barbossa's monkey had in moonlight.

GlassCamel In reply to subtilisin [2010-01-12 21:37:04 +0000 UTC]

I wonder if a cursed merino wool monkey would turn into rayon or polyester in the moonlight?

I think you did a really outstanding job on this. When I saw the thumbnail in my devwatches, I, at first, thought it was a photo of a real monkey. lol! Seriously! I did! Then I saw it was from you and I was like, "That's needle felted?!?! Whoa!"

I'm not really fond of them either - I was fishing for ideas and a monkey sounded like more fun than a bear. XD

Wow this is crazy good! I am super impressed. I've needle felted before and failed at making a flower (I drew blood one too many times)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GlassCamel In reply to Aderyn-Azula [2010-01-11 21:51:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much!

I've never made a good flower. I'm much better at round-y things than flat things. But I can personally attest that the instances of "Augh! I'm bleeding!" occur far less frequently with time and practice I still don't know why I chose such a dangerous hobby. o_O
