This is my personal version of the moment everyone who spent the teenage in ’80/’90 takes in his/her heart!
eheh, kidding… but I actually think Vegeta’s expression before he sacrifices himself is one of the most powerful scenes in Dragonball. At least, my favorite one.
Here, I wanted to focus on his glance, while staring at Majin Buu after taking The Decision.

The prince’s sacrifice is a great turning point in his evolution, and one of the things that mostly make of him a beautiful, heroic, multifaceted character out of the merciless kick-ass (let me say: quite plain) villain he originally was.

A little observation: if compared to other pictures I formerly made, in this one I varied the style I used for DB fanarts. It is an experiment, and in particular a choice to somehow express the evolution in the character. The change in style is supposed to recall the change of the character.
Every picture can be seen as a stand-alone piece, but I always like to think it’s a part of a series too. So, this difference wasn’t mere case, I wanted him to look a bit more realistic here, maybe more human (?). Clearly wounded but unshakably firm.

I didn’t outline a deformed landscape, to let his expression convey its strength with no means of particular light effects. I think one like Vegeta would prefer to be let expressing all his greatness by himself, showing he doesn’t need any help to be great (well, this one seems a bit maniacal of me … but it’s to give you the idea… ).

I find it quite uncanny to see such a sunny weather in contrast to the interior tumult in his eyes. It’s sadly mocking, isn’t it?
