Description Raindrops froze instantly after they fell, covering everything in cold glass, the icy weight pulling everything down. It was a wonderful but a scary and weird sight at once - and not even my grandmother remembers seeing anything like this (in our country), no matter the many years she's lived.

Hard winters are coming.

Third of a 3-piece series. The first one - a non-macro view of the branches of a tree, covered in glassy ice - can be seen (if dA works) here: [link] . The second one, of leaves, is here: [link] .

Colours are slightly retouched.

Hope you like it.

You chose to expose the one twig that managed to "free" itself. I should think this is a cheerful thing
I can't believe I missed it while browsing your gallery. Silly me
It's very beautiful!

thanks! yep i chose that twig and the surrounding ones because of the contrast - had i showed only ice-covered stuff, there would've been no firm ground for comparison...
as for missing a piece in a gallery, don't worry, most galleries have so many pieces in them that makes very easy to overlook a bunch...

it looks like you took them off the tree/bush and had them on a white background or something??? well anyway, it's absolutely lovely. delicate.

first of all: thanks. as for the background: no, i didn't take them off (even though that would also have been an option ), the background shows a completely empty segment of a very light-gray sky whitened further by retouching. (i just had to find the right position to take the shot from.)

I've seen ice like this a few times. It's really pretty, but very destructive. Invariably, our poor trees will lose at least a limb or two. Sometimes we lose whole trees =/.

gaborcsigas In reply to outshined [2004-02-26 09:26:55 +0000 UTC]

yes, that's what happened round here too - whole branches broke off, they couldn't bear the weight. the glassy ice has become their coffin... thanks for the comment!

I like the concept of this. To me it kind of feels like the branch is trapped by ice, but is slowly breaking free. That or the ice is slowing taking over. Guess it depends on your mood whihc way you want to take it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gaborcsigas In reply to RedTalonTPF [2004-02-24 11:44:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment, for the thoughts. Indeed, the branch was trapped in ice, which was slowly melting away, chunks of it falling to the ground as the wather got warmer and warmer... till evening came again, when the process turned around. And this picture here can be interpreted in both ways, just as you said.

oh...i had to look at this for a while before i ssaw what it was.
at first i thought it was a shot of some bacteria or something.
i really like the clarity and cropping.
