Description An HDR shot of this year's CP Rail Holiday train sitting at the Fort Edward Train station. I hope I didn't blow this one out..the original was too staid for a grand engine and a wonderful event as this.

Yeah they have a nice paint scheme, I always liked the D&H scheme too although they're all but gone.

Nicely done. I'm awed that you managed to get the people in the shot without motion artifacts, at least none that I could see. The HDR adds a lot of interest to this shot, for instance, emphasizing the sort of rainbow reflection from the left windshield panel. It bears a lot of repeated examination!

Thank you, I did the HDR from one shot done in RAW format and used Photoshop's Topaz plug in. I do like that utility. I thought HDR would help this shot shine a little more since it was such an overcast day and the original had a rather dull cast. Thanks again for the compliments, they're much appreciated!

Ah, that makes sense then. Don't tell anyone, but I've been finding tone mapping of single exposure RAW images tempting as well, at least in some cases.

I'm sure that torques some of the purists doing 7 precisely bracketed exposures, but in a lot of cases it seems like the preferable approach, if one avoids overdoing things (or if you just want some of the characteristics of the tone mapping process without hours of manipulation by hand).

Lol. Secret's safe with me. I did a little tone mapping myself but Topaz seems to really get them spot on..and don't get me wrong, I like doing several exposures too, just sometimes one has to plan to do the thing then execute it...maybe with the weather improving I will get out a bit more to experiment..and you're right, HDR from a single image or multiples can go horribly wrong if you blow out the highlights or the saturation, too much or too little noise..so many variables and so much to keep learning, that's half the fun.

HDR is such fun to use, I'm glad I decided to walk to the end of the train to get the pic.

Thank you, it's so hard to tell with some of these computer screens, looks good on one but not on another...

Yea I run into that problem alot because I use a laptop, so tilt of the screen changes things not to mention everyone about uses at different refresh rate, kelvin temp, and so on !

Have a good day.

Lol, so sweet, I thought this train went all over but I think it just goes up the east coast. Kids are so funny aren't they, their world is just so small to them.

I have photos of it, but it was before I got my nikon, so I would have to find and scan them. They dont play music like yours does, but they allow the children to take a tour of the train. It is really neat, next time it comes to town, I will def. take photos for you!
