Description Another piece for the portfolio!
(it's more than 3 weeks late, but that's besides the point.)
Interpetations!?

Medium: Traditional
Tools: Watercolor (for background) and Craypas oil pastel
Time: Oh jeez, at least six weeks? Long time, lots o' work, It was great

EDIT 4/18/10: Quick edit on the darker parts of the toucan, just to make 'em less fuzzy looking. Oh and hey, guess what? This piece got accepted to an art show! How cool is that?

So what do you think I need to work on? What do you like about this? What do you dislike? I personally like the compostion, but might need to work on the pastel part of this piece. What about the texture? Please comment?

This is a really good painting, reminds me a lot of those reeeeally old MTV commercials where they showed industrial backgrounds and such, with a giant sad penguin wailing away sadly. Was really meaningful and emotional, as is this. Fantastic work. The color-contrast works marvellously as well!

This has got to be one of the most spectacular pieces of artwork I've seen on this website.
Reminds me of this animation by Anthony Francisco Sheppard. The dull lifeless city in the bg in my eyes represent the fact that advancements in technology ruined the natural beauty found all around us. We are so caught up in this surreal way of living that we forget the important things. The more time that flys by, the more regrets each and every one of us has to live with. This toucan is hope; a reminder that there is still some promise in this cruel, corrupt world.

Incredible.

Critiquing through

That background. It is simply stunning! And with watercolors?! I really love it. Your execution is beautiful and the way it falls into streaks of paint at the bottom is brilliant! I can't suggest anything that needs work for the bg.

Critique on the bird really depends on what you were trying to depict. On the one hand, the bird is much less realistic looking than the city, which could be taken as an artistic choice if it connects to something you wanted to portray in this piece. On the other, perhaps you just wanted to emphasize the bird's color being a contrast from the city in black and white. In this case, perhaps adding some more details and highlights (especially white) to the bird in order to make the style blend a little better with the city would be a good choice. This would also place a little more emphasis on the color difference.

Honestly, this piece is really beautiful! Thank you for sharing it and I hope my critique was somewhat helpful

Nice concept of using BW for the background and the color for the forefront object, BW signifying the fading away part.

Again well worked upon painting the buildings. I like the way you have tried to describe the "falling" of the world(rather the cities) with the paint strokes applied at various places. I also like the BW for the buildings as I feel that those buildings have taken away the various colors the nature has to offer.

I also like the way you have depicted the toucan, sitting far away from the dead place. watching carefully. The color on the bird attracts the attention of the viewer along with making him distinguish the living portion out of the whole art piece.

I somehow feel that you should work a bit more upon the bird to give it a bit of realistic look which would enhance your whole artwork.

Give its body a bit more hairy look by adding a few brush strokes at places. Also the eye and the beak should be worked upon.

Overall- Good work.

P.S. - This is just what I feel about your work, and there aint a scene where it all has to be true.

Good day,
Ashwin

Wow, that was an incredibly in-depth critique, thanks! I agree with you on the bird though; it was my first time using oil pastel, so it was a pretty experimental piece in that aspect. Thanks again for the critique!

I just LOVE your use of color and the contrast between the toucan black and white bleeding city scape behind it. And what I get from it is the theme that nature will always prevail and how unnatural everything man made really is. Truly remarkable!

This is a beautiful piece and congratulations on the art show. You really deserve it.
Your choice of colour and materials are perfect. It's obvious alot of time has gone into the detail in the background and this is definately worth it.

I agree that the pastel part needs a little more work. Maybe try adding some darker colours on the beak for more depth. I think the underside would look good shaded with dark blues and purples.
But then I really know nothing about pastel work.
Great picture.

This is so cool! The toucan caught my eye, then I saw the background and I was like, sweet! I'm not a fan of working with watercolors so anyone who can manipulate them to make something awesome has my admiration. On that subject, I wouldn't change anything about the background. 'Tis fantastic!
I've done very little with oil pastels, but from what I know about them they're kind of hard to work with. (Harder than colored pencils, at least. ) You did a wonderful job on the toucan, but if you had to improve something I would say you could make his (her?) beak a little smoother. I like the chest, though. The texture looks like feathers.
Oh gosh... interpretation... hmmm... the first thing that came to mind was that Toucan looked out of place (not in a bad way), so maybe he was displaced? It could be a kind of environmental thing, like deforestation, or maybe about being out of your element? That's just what came to mind personally. Congrats on the art show! Great work and great piece.

Goodness, I can't imagine how long writing all that could have taken you! Hahaha
This is my first time working with oil pastels, and lemme tell ya, they're difficult! It smudges in places you don't want it to, then the black and the yellow feathers got all messy and... it was tough
Spot-on interpetation! I'm very impressed!
On a side note, I'd really like to thank you for all the wonderful s and the watch! You seriously just made my day!

The backgrounds' lilting buildings give it a charm that it really holds on to well in contrast with the vibrant toucan. Accented by what seems like wilted trees and simply being in b&w, I think it makes for a great piece. Personally, I like the toucan, but have two quips about how it's painted:
1. the eyes seem too simple for me. I think you can get a lot of expression out of the eyes, even if it's just a bird.
2. The detail seems too... minimal, really, especially when contrasted with the background. I feel like simplicity here COULD work, but the toucan seems to not be simple by intent; rather, it straddles the line of simplistic and complex in it's colors and detail. At this point, I'm just spitballing, I really can't pinpoint what exactly seems off about it, I just have that feeling. Maybe some fine black outlines?
Overall, a very good piece!

Thank you so much for the in-depth critique! I really appreciate sincere comments like yours!
Mr. Toucan up there is actually made with oil pastels (cheap ones at that) and it was my first time working with them, so it's definitely not the best With the watercolor in the background, I have a little more of a knack with the medium, and I think it shows.
Thanks for the thoughts on the eyes! I think those fine black outlines would be a really good idea, I'll definitely keep that in mind!

This stuck out to me in the message center because of just how bright the bird is. I think that is wonderful. However, I'm a little unsure about the contrast you've portrayed between the foreground and background - I think it's a little bit too much. I really love the idea, but I feel that some subtle colours added into the background (maybe some gentle blue shading so as it is still in contrast with the oranges and yellows of the foreground) would draw less attention to the starkness of it and help it to 'blend' more. I realise that the contrast was probably the point of it, but at the moment it feels to me more like two separate images than one piece of artwork.

That said, this really is spectacular. The detailing in the background is wonderful, and the bird feels very alive and vibrant. Fabulous work ^^

Funny that you mention those blues in the background, because I seriously thought about adding some dark blue and purple splatters in the city. I'm not sure why, but I decided against it. (Probably just being lazy )

Wow I think this is just brilliant. I love the background, with the different textures in it and its really interesting to look at. The contrast between the vivid colours and the black and white is also very effective. I really love it and can hardly think of anything to improve, although the lower park of the beak looks a bit radioactive to me... But that's fine

I'm afraid I don't really understand this piece. It's eye-catching, but it seems all the elements are so unrelated to one another [if I'm wrong, do tell me. I just don't understand it on my own]

I DO like the contrast of a black and white background and colorful image in the foreground. I've seen this done before and they normally make some really interesting pictures

Meaning aside, the components themselves are very nice. The little details on the background image is very nifty and rises a bit if jealousy in me lol. The toucan is so colorful and cheery.

I'm really glad you like all the details in the background, they were a real pain in the butt, totally worth it though
Thanks for the honesty, I really appericate it I think what I was trying to get at was how different the two are (the two being the toucan and the city). Contrast was my major point on this, and there's more than one theme to it, like black and white vs. color, nature vs. industry, organic vs. manufactured, etc. It might seem a little random at first, but there's really so many ways to look at it

Hi!

This is really good! Both the pastel-work and the background look amazing!

I agree with *Doodlee-a the beak could use a little more shadow.

I think it might be nice to put the slightest suggestion of colour in the background, but then that would lessen your contrast.

Thanks for the wonderful critique! I didn't get the best picture of this (it's kinda big ) so some of the shadow and the little details on the beak got washed out
Interesting you mentioned that slight suggestion of color in the background; when I first started this, I intended on using some dark blues and purples for some of the splatters and shadows on the buildings. I'm not sure why, but I eventually decided against it. In your opinion, do you think the blues and purples would have added to the piece or taken away from it?

da-joint-stock In reply to friendly-mushroom00 [2010-05-15 21:45:55 +0000 UTC]

No problem!

Its hard to get a decent picture anytime.

I think the faintest of blues or purples might work OK, but I think some faint rusty-red shadows (very faint) might work well as well. If you have a photo program to test it beforehand I'd definitely suggest it
