Description Day 33 of 365

You've gotta check every window in the house before you find that perfect frost crystal. Found this one at the bottom of one of the windows in the living room. Its shape reminded me of a pair of wings

To take frost photos like this, you need:
some frost
a DSLR (preferably Canon)
a standard 18-55mm kit lens

Love the capture. It looks like ROTG's Jack Frost's frost ferns. So delicate and beautiful.

They can, but Canons have fewer issues when it comes to reverse macro Thanks!

Aeltari [2011-02-12 03:45:53 +0000 UTC]

I had a look at that tutorial link, what a cool idea!

My question is, when I tried it, I had no way of focusing the shot, also could not set aperture etc and all I got was fuzz and when I did get to see the subject, it was only sharp in one spot and blurry in others. That kept shifting because standing stock still is next to impossible for a person.

How did you get this amazing image to be so focused all around?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FramedByNature In reply to Aeltari [2011-02-13 00:36:50 +0000 UTC]

The depth of field when shooting in reverse macro is incredibly shallow. If you want the entire subject to be in focus, you have to shoot it from a head-on angle. For example, if you're looking at your subject at an angle, only a narrow band of it will be within the focus range. For this shot, the frost was on the window. As long as I shot straight at the frost and didn't angle my camera, most of the crystal stayed in focus
