BREAKING SANITY
"Rosa catches a cold! Two sick mares and friendly stallion approach the herd, while Xolo gets into some questionable mushrooms!"
------
It was hot for an autumn day. Or perhaps it was just because of the extra heat generated from three pregnant mares. That process of creating life that sent the mare's bodies into overdrive, causing their bellies to act as an indoor oven and creating a well of warmth.
And irritability.
The herd had split briefly, seeing a small band of horses in the distance and not wanting to get into any mishaps. Caliente and Xolo went to go talk to the herd (their band stallion looking increasingly worried at the two sickly looking mares) while the three preggo eggos took little Rosa to a nearby cottonwood grove. The soon-to-be-mothers all walked slowly for the little filly, her broken legs healing, but not quite sturdy. It wasn't long before the fragile thing collapsed into a heap and slipped into a dreamless sleep, exhaustion overcoming her tiny body. Cazadora sighed in worry, while Dama nudged her softly in encouragment.
"She'll get better. Don't you worry." She whispered softly, flicking her tail lazily against the onslaught of autumn mosquitoes. The mare had undergone a sad transformation since Sioux's disappearance, and her once playful and excited nature was now of seriousness and business. Caz smiled response, bending down to give the foal a warm nuzzle while Fria watched where the missing herd members conversed with the other herd. The female band was thick as theives, and there were always eyes watching one another. It was how they had survived so long without Sioux.
Fria snorted hotly at a horsefly, her ears pinned against the little nuisance. "I know the falling leaves just started," She hissed, snapping at her gigantic belly as the foal inside visibly kicked, "But if winter doesn't come soon, I'm going to start throwing a fit." Caz chuckled in return, while Dama shook her head.
"Be careful what you wish for Fria," Dama scolded softly, looking briefly into the sky, "We've been lucky with the weather and surviving. Winter will bring it's own set of challenges- especially for these new babies..." Her voice faded slowly as she thought of the life stirring in her womb. Sioux's child. His first child. Fria's foal had another father before she joined their herd, and Caz' baby was much farther away. Dama's heart broke that Sioux would miss his first child's birth... he was missing so much. The mare swallowed slowly, trying to force back the tears that threatened to fall. No. She was done mourning him. They had to move on. There was no other choice.
She quickly changed her thoughts to compassion for the now wiggling babe inside her belly. They would never know their father. But they would have a mother that fought the world for them. Dama pushed any sadness down deep, and bolstered herself up. She turned her head as she saw Xolo and Caliente walking towards them, the other herd advancing in the opposite direction. Should they have teamed up with them? Dama wanted to wait forever for Sioux... but they could only wait so long. They needed a stallion. And they needed a good one. With a sigh she smiled at the two other mares, welcoming them into the shade.
It was time. Time to say goodbye to Sioux... and find a new band stallion.
