Description An F7F Tigercat at the same airshow along with the other Grumman fighters. It's a very graceful plane. It was a dedicated nightfighter.

the Corsair and the Tigercat are probably the most beautiful aircrafts the navy has ever seen

Actually they did see service after the WW 2. The F7F-4N was certified for carrier service and the other variants were land based. They were used in the Korean War and were retired in 1954.

Thanks. It was at an airshow at (at the time) the Willow Grove NAS. Unfortunately, due to logistical problems, they no longer have the airshow.

It is. It was also notorious for being a "tail sitter" when empty. Crews would put oil drums under the tail to keep it on its wheel.

It was a common problem with planes of that era. Most of the weight is right around the center of gravity so any shift aft could be a problem.

Wow.

I've never seen one of those before.

(never a photo)

They didn't make many of them since jets were beginning to come into service. It's a gorgeous plane, though.

Yep.

The funny thing is that the crews used to put empty oil barrels under the tail because they were notorious "tail sitters". If they weren't loaded properly, they would sit on their tails.

Well that could be expected, what with the very forward undercarriage and all.

Looks kinda like a one tailed lighting.
But wider.

Yeah. It's also a fighter so they tend to be a bit touchy when it comes to weight and balance.

They have to be I suppose.

All the best fighter planes are designed to be inherently unstable. That's why they can turn so well. They want to turn rather than fly straight and level.

Yep I mean just look at the F-16

The F-16 could not maintain straight and level flight without it's onboard computer systems.
