Description After a loooooooooooooooooooong period of inactivity from both dA and metalworking, here's my first project in a while. It's not based off any historical model so is technically fantasy. It's also made of mild steel, which means it can't really be used for sparring and won't hold an edge due to the chance of the metal bending, so it's more of just an experiment/show piece.

Thanks! I'm only using a hand drill, jigsaw and bench grinder plus jewellers and metal files at the moment.

I see, with the bench grinder I would round up a bit the end piece, it could bite on your hand with those sharp edges, other than that is quite a good approach on a oakeshot type of sword

Yeah, I've been gently filing down one corner of the pommel as it can scuff your palm, but only on that point. I hadn't considered it being similar to an Oakeshott type, mainly due to the flat, weightless pommel and lack of a fuller. The design just came off the top of my head as a first attempt at a sword.

So welcome back on dA in that sense.
I just realized that I have never payed much attention to the leather grip on swords. Some modern fantasy designs or futuristic katanas also seem to use less soft materials for the grip.
Well, I'll just blame the small silver colored LEGO swords for that ;D It could also be that I got used to the optics of Soul Reaver from the Legacy of Kain game series or Rebellion from Devil May Cry.

Thanks for the welcome
To be honest, I don't really know much about leather grips on swords, wikipedia mentions that untanned leather was popular for a while but I've not really seen any like this.
A big part of why I did it this way was out of habit from when I made wooden wasters.
