I craved all the boys I dated
so badly, the pretty ones
who smelled like adolescent
cologne and unfledged pleasures.
I believe I needed them.
In fact, had one of those fellows
said, "Come to me; I will be your father
and your lover, your psychiatric
nurse and your bosom friend --
because honesty is the best
policy, and those things
are what you really want
from your man" -- I think then
that I might finally have
softened in his tenacious arms
and slept through the glaring dawn.
