In the game he is simply called the Hero's Shade or Golden Wolf. In-game, he hints that he was once a Hero too, but he died with regrets since he hadn't passed down the secret techniques to the next generation so they could protect Hyrule. That's why he teaches you those techniques and then disappears. There were always theories that said he was the ghost of the Hero of Time from Ocarina of Time, and it recently got confirmed in the official encyclopedia released by Nintendo "Hyrule Historia". He is confirmed to be the ghost of the Link from Ocarina of Time and also your blood relative of sorts. TP takes places about a hundred years after the events of Ocarina of Time so he could be TP's grandfather.
