Description A very quick and simple demonstration for #watercolorists Aqua Project: Masking [link]

This was very easy to make. First of all, I applied some colored washes to the paper and also some blue splatters (because they're fun ). After that dried, I painted some tree shapes with masking fluid and also made splatters with it, to create shapes and patterns that would look like flowers. And on top, I added another wash (darker this time) of watercolors and ink.

It's a very simple thing to do and if anyone feels like taking this idea further and making something more complex, by all means, please do so.

Works inspired by this:

Masking fluid keeps tearing my paper. It makes me want to cry tears of blood.

Thank you. It's the inks, the pigments are stronger and more vivid than they are with watercolors.

Ah, yes, but of course. That explains a lot. It would have to be one hell of a watercolour to create that kind of intensity. But I say it still takes skill to make it look this good.

what watercolors do you use? While I agree that generally inks have stronger pigment, I've found some tube watercolors to be very intense pigmentation.

Derwent watercolors. True, not the best brand out there, but they work for me.

That's cool, I've used them a bit myself. There are 2 brands of tube color you might want to check out just for giggles - M. Graham from the US Pacific West and Shinhan from Korea. With both of these I've found a little goes a long way, and in the case of M. Graham's I constantly have to work to de-saturate the colors with enough water before applying.

That said, I'm interested in trying out the liquid inks sometime. I keep seeing all this amazing work, which frequently resembles watercolor, but sometimes seems even more luminous. I'm a big fan of Charles Vess for that sort of work.

I'm a great fan of C Vess, too. And I'm currently using Rembrandt and Holbein.
