Description
Ran (pronounced rawn) is the Norse Goddess of storms, wife of Aegir, God of the sea. Her name means “robbery”, due to her penchant for sinking ships and collecting the drowned sailors in her nets. The Norse believed that drowning victims were not admitted to Valhalla or Helheim (their versions of heaven and hell), but went instead to Ran’s realm of the dead at the bottom of the ocean. They had nine daughters, each of which represented a different type of wave. Those daughters are all simultaneously the mother of the guardian god Heimdall.
Ran is beautiful and characterised with a net, she uses it to capture and drown sailors, and other folk, who fall into the sea. Her daughters, the nine waves, are said to follow one on the other each stronger than the last. In this way it can be surmised that her daughters help Ran to sink the ships. Almost like reverse fishing.
