Description

"(The Schaw woman watched Lard Nar talk with Pepps a few yards off.

She couldn't hear what they said, but Lard Nar looked quite distressed.

Exhedra looked away every once in a while to avoid staring and being rude, but as always kept observing.

Finally the Vorts parted ways, and Exhedra watched Lard Nar cross out of the bridge and into his quarters.

She glanced at Pepps to see he was perfectly fine and happy, but sensed an unspoken tension of sorts.

But she knew this came less from Pepps, and more from the captain.

She waited and waited, but Lard Nar never emerged.

It wasn't his shift to sleep.

     "Lard Nar?"

She asked softly while gently knocking on the door.

"J-Just a minute!"

He stammered.

She heard his little hocks touch the floor and a few sniffles before the tiny captain opened the door and looked up at her.

"Oh, Exhedra...

Eh -- can I help you?"

He looked exhausted.

     "Perhaps," she replied.

"And then...perhaps I would be helping you?"

"Pardon?"

He asked with genuine confusion.

"May I come in, Lard Nar?"

"Ahm...Oh why not, it can't hurt."

He moved aside and went back to a small pile of boxes and sat on one.

Exhedra, suddenly very alert being in a room that wasn't hers, shut the door and calmly walked up to him.

She did not join him; she merely stood.

Lard Nar glanced up at her several times before registering that she wasn't sitting.

"You want to sit?"

"I have not yet been invited to.

It is most polite to sit when permitted, especially in another's living space."

Lard Nar was thrown.

He knew Exhedra was polite, but he never knew how extensive that was.

He was so mentally disgruntled she could have dipped herself in mud and rolled around on his bed and he wouldn't have cared.

"O-oh, um -- please, sit."

       "Thank you."

She sat on a box a little higher than his.

Lard Nar tried not to look like he was as unhappy as he was, but all was in vain.

Exhedra could almost see it.

"I...could not help but notice you and Pepps talking a short while ago.

You seem upset...

May I ask what's wrong?"

Lard Nar sighed and shook his head.

"I...

Would really love to get this off my chest, but I'm not sure it's right."

"If you're afraid I will say anything to Pepps, please know I will not."

He looked up at her and right into her eyes.

Hers met his with ginger consent, and he knew he could trust her.

Lard Nar was too worn down from holding so much in as it was.

"If you're willing to listen, I...

I could really use an ear."

       "I have two."

She smiled softly, letting him know she was there for him.

He weakly smiled back, then looked away and sighed.

"Well...

I was talking to Pepps, and I said how happy I was just that he was here.

And I know it's been a week, but I'm just...

Aw I'm smitten, my best FRIEND is here, ha ha!"

Exhedra smiled in duration to his, but it faded as his did.

"You told him you were happy to have him.

Was he not happy to be with you as well?"

"No!

No he was, he...certainly was.

Um...

But he said something that made me worry very much."

In his distress he couldn't look at her.

He couldn't look at anyone; it hurt too badly.

       "It must have been bad.

I sense much sadness, and when you were talking I could see your heart breaking."

"Yes, well...

He told me that he didn't believe this was real."

       "Specifically?"

"Everything.

This, being on the Massive, being free!

He says he thinks that he's...gone off the deep end, and that...soon enough he'll ''snap out of it again'' and wake up in his c-ell--"

He turned away and pushed his goggles up, then seemed to wipe his eyes.

Exhedra remained quiet to avoid embarrassing him.

       "I see...

So, he believes he has "lost his mind?" "

Lard Nar adjusted his goggles back into place and turned back to her after a moment.

His voice was weak.

"Y-es....

Ohh, he thinks this is all some sort of imagining, and I tried to tell him he's wrong but he just nodded and said "i hope so."...

And he said he knows it could all be fake because he's lost it before, hnn...

I don't know what to do, I want to help him but i'll only get frustrated."

       "At him?"

"Ye-- well...

No, just...

Mad in general, I guess.

It's complicated..."

He slouched forward and began to rub his face with his tiny hands in frustration.

"It can be hard when people change.

Of course, prison could not have been a nice place, especially for the innocent."

"I know, I-I know, and that's why I'm not mad at HIM.

I'm mad at the guards, and the people who arrested him.

You know i tried asking him what it was like in there?

The man started trembling and I...

He just looked so scared...

So I told him he didn't have to say anything if he didn't want to, and that helped.

I didn't know he was that screwed up until I saw him almost cry..."

"That must have been quite distressing."

"Yeah, it was.

I knew there was a chance he could change from prison, but not like this.

I just wish I could MAKE him understand that this is real and that he really has friends, and ME.

It's all so screwed up..."

Lard Nar pulled in his knees, hugging them sadly.

"I don't know what to do..."

He hadn't known Pepps was hurting externally, but after seeing him start to fall apart in front of him, Lard Nar knew his friend was suffering inside.

Pepps looked happy, but under the surface he was sinking and all Lard Nar could do was sit and watch.

Exhedra adjusted herself, finally coming to grips with the whole situation.

"Lard Nar, you have said before that Pepps is not a simple being.

You have said to me that, in fact he is very complicated.

That, he says things that are simple, but he makes things that are astonishing.

And that, he apparently was able to do things that others cannot in written work and tests."

"Yes, the man is simply a genius.

He's...

A mind like I can't explain.

One minute he's simple and funny, but then out of nowhere he becomes, ah....

Just... --

Profound, and wise and full of the right things to say.

I don't know if that's in there anymore.

It sounds odd, and VERY selfish of me, but...

I miss my friend.

He's HERE, and I still miss him...

How can I fix this?

H-how can I help him understand...?"

As he looked away again he let go of his knees and let his hocks sink to the floor slowly.

Exhedra sat up a little.

Her voice rang with understanding, and it was clear she did not think he was the least bit selfish.

"There is no selfishness in missing the ones you love.

But in the case of Pepps, he just needs time.

..............

You say he is complex.

Well...

Think about what he's been through, what they did to him.

Think about how scared he must be that there's a chance he could be taken away again.

Lard Nar nodded sadly.

He knew.

Exhedra continued.

"Even when situations are not savory, people learn to live and exist that way.

Sometimes, even when change is good, it can turn that person's whole world around.

I sense that Pepps is too stressed to handle freedom."

"W-wait...

You mean, like...

I'm sorry, what do you mean?"

"I mean that he cannot process going from prisonization to the free world.

I sense that, despite the fact that things are better, it's just too much for him to take in all at once.

When we escaped, and you pulled the sheet off of him, he did not look happy; he looked mortified."

"So you're saying...

Pepps doesn't want to understand?"

"What I am saying, is that Pepps is very scattered by losing the schedule and way of life he's lived for so long, even if it was terrible.

For him, it is easier to believe that this is all a fantasy."

"So he's delusional."

       "Yes, and no.

He has created his own delusion.

When Pepps is ready to accept that he is free, he will embrace it.

And I sense that when that day comes, you will both be happier."

She smiled warmly, and Lard Nar took the time to absorb this idea.

Still, he had questions.

"And so...

I shouldn't try to make him understand?"

       "That is right.

When he is happy, be happy.

When he is sad or scared, be there for him.

The more supportive you are, the less pressured he will feel to accept freedom."

"Huh...

I...

Would have never guessed it was that complicated, but also that simple...

You always know what to say."

       "Oh, ha.

I just listen to my heart.

You think with your head too much; learn to embrace your heart.

You are a tiny man, but I see your heart for what it really is."

Lard Nar became flustered.

He hated being told he was tiny, but he also knew Exhedra meant no harm.

She really had just complimented him, so he chose to acknowledge that, and smiled sheepishly.

"It's good, right?

Because if it's bad --"

        "Hahah!

No, no it is good!

No bad heart would create a resistance meant to set people free.

You're very brave."

They both became shy.

Exhedra because of her increasing crush, and Lard Nar because he had just gotten a series of very unexpected compliments.

It was quiet for a little under a minute.

"Th-thank you, Exhedra.

For -- for everything."

"It is more than my pleasure."

Exhedra politely excused herself from the room soon after and went back to the bridge.

Everyone was working diligently as ever, and Pepps was mingling with the crew happily.

It seemed as if wherever he went he brought nothing but happiness to everyone, as everyone had a big happy smile on their face by the time he left.

Exhedra went back to her secluded little space off to the side, watching over everything as was the usual way.

Few ever thought Exhedra paid any attention, but she was always watching.

It was almost as if she was the mother of the ship.

The very quiet mother.

Eventually Lard Nar emerged from his room and looked out at everyone, and watched Pepps.

Now that he understood his friend a little better, he had a new sense of confidence in him recovering.

The road wouldn't be easy, but it would be well worth the wait.

Just before climbing back up into his chair, he glanced at Exhedra.

Their eyes met from across the room, and they each exchanged a soft smile.)"

MOOOOAR STORIES!!!!

I'm actually less proud of this one, idk yet.

Spectra22 says I seem confident about my typing, BUT THIS ONE WAS REALLY FREAKING HARD AND THE ART TOOK FOEVER BECAUSE I JUST HAD TO GIVE EXHEDRA THIS SPECIFIC COLOR OF ROBE AND MAKE HER WEAR IT 24/7 AND BWAAAAAAH

.............

Ahem, anyway.

I am happy with the artwork though, I took my time on it.

In the last panel Exhedra seems too short to me all over, but oh well.

I think her face makes up for it haha.

The reason this piece is actually important to share is for many reasons.

1. it expresses how I see Pepps (Prisoner 777) having originally coped with getting out of prison.

2. it shows interaction between Lard Nar and Exhedra before they dated (and before Nar even liked her that way).

3. EXHEDRA DIALOGUE!!!!

Her dialogue is a REALLY big deal any time, as i'm still developing her as a character and working on her view on the universe.

Here you see how polite and reserved she is, yet willing to help others in need.

Particularly Lard Nar, since she has a big crush on him

Anyway I hope this all runs together smoothly, it just seems off to me but eh.

I've been pumping out a lot of deep stuff guys, bear with meh XD

ENJOY!

---DO NOT STEAL MY CONCEPTS, ART OR IDEAS!! I DO NOT OWN INVADER ZIM BUT I DO OWN THIS ART!!!---

It truly is complicated

This may have been hard to write, but it turned out brilliantly  It seems like you've really been topping yourself lately with your art and your writing.  I feel like I have a much better understanding of Exhedra, Pepps and Lard Nar, now, and I loved every word of their story.  And the art to go with it is just beautiful-- I especially love that deep blue you used for Exhedra's robes  Seriously, this thing just seems a little "off" to you?  C'MOOOOOOOON!!    YOU CRAY-ZEH, WOMAN!!

What's with all this 'it seems off to me' nonesense? This is awesome! Not only the art, but I think you really outdid yourself with the story here. I feel like I see a new side to Pepps now, too. Before, I used to think Pepps had a goofy/comical personality where he would try to make others feel good in times of need because of his situation in prison- he wanted others to feel good because he knew what it was like to be sad. But what I didn't know was that Pepps has had to rely on Lard Nar before to make HIM feel better, and that he actually had to go through quite a bit of what could almost be described as MOURNING after escaping from prison. Even to the point where he couldn't believe he ever DID escape such an awful place (I actually read similar stories about jews who had escaped concentration camps. If I remember correctly, many had to suffer such harsh conditions that they really didn't feel anything after escaping- not joy and not sadness. An interesting connection there)

I love when you do these comic-like sequences, although I feel like panel 2 is kind of hard to see (and the last panel is actually super clear.) Still having phone issues, or was that solved?

Oh to add-- with Pepps, it's kind of like me; when Pepps is showing happiness he is GENUINELY happy, but that doesn't mean he doesn't still hurt deep down or have problems that need to be dealt with.
I see him occasionally having flashbacks and bad dreams and even accidentally blurting out bad things that have happened to him.
I also plan on describing or explaining more of what I imagined happened to him in there.
But again, when Pepps shows happiness it IS real

Interesting, I think I gotcha I try to have that sort of outlook a lot of the time, too. Is it just me, or do we instill a lot of ourselves in our characters?

Huh, I did not know about the Jews in that, that is quite sad.
And LOL thank you so much!!!
I did work hard on this, so I'm glad someone genuinely appreciates that
As for Pepps luckily this state he's in doesn't last too terribly long (like literally not even a week after this comic he snaps out of it and starts to assume that nature I've given him again).
A lot of prisoners have a hard time adjusting to the free world, and with Pepps i kind of pictured it as very off.
Despite "creating his own delusion," he still remains jolly and trying to make everyone smile and laugh because he chooses to be happy.
*sighs and rubs forehead* i hope I'm making sense here, Pepps is a complicated one
Basically he's the same as ever, but left prison very damaged and couldn't cope with being yanked from it right away.
He still has problems and is missing about half of his mind, but he's happy the majority of the time.

Ugh no, my phone camera is getting worse, i used my mom's phone and sent myself the pic XD
And yeah panel two was tilted too much into the light and it obscured it.
I have a clearer pic of that and i can post it ^v^
