Description Alternate Title: ESDA's Techniques for Working in the Digital Field

So many people have begged me to make a backgrounds tutorial that I finally gritted my teeth and made one. This doesn't involve even half of what I do to make a digital landscape, but it should teach you how to better use the tools you have and inspire you to mess around and play with Photoshop some more. I hope you'll create your own techniques for making backgrounds, mine's are not the best nor are they the only ones.
And if it sucks when you make it the first time, try a second time. Practice makes perfect.
Cheerio!

Wish this would open on my phone. Oh well. I was just wondering if you take background commissions. I am working on an animated film and I am looking for a bg artist. Thanks for your time.

Let me tell you how long I have been looking for a decent tutorial on how to make a good looking field of grass, long, short, or whatever.

Literally two years.

I don't know how I never found this before to be honest, I guess I just wasn't looking hard enough but I just want to thank you for this. I might even have to try out the tree sometime too when I get the chance!

Your tutorial was used here: [link]

In short, thank you. (:

FablePaint In reply to SephirothCrystal [2011-06-05 07:09:01 +0000 UTC]

No prob! I suggest you continue tweaking the technique yourself. I've moved away from it as my painting skills have increased and now am a bit more advanced in my landscape painting methods. And there's no substitute for painting from life. Find a photo and reference it to get practice.

SephirothCrystal In reply to FablePaint [2011-06-05 07:13:15 +0000 UTC]

Aye! It was my first try, but I will definitely be working with it and changing things as I get better. I'm still horrendously new at backgrounds, so right now I guess I'm just learning the technique to be able to paint from life. (:

FablePaint In reply to SephirothCrystal [2011-06-05 07:45:12 +0000 UTC]

Wonderful! I encourage you to keep at it. And just because you feel it sucks doesn't mean you should stop. My first arts sucked too.

SephirothCrystal In reply to FablePaint [2011-06-05 18:21:55 +0000 UTC]

Lol, no, I never feel like my art sucks anymore. Haven't felt that way for a few years now! I guess it comes when you accept that literally everything you do is a learning experience. I've been so afraid of backgrounds I'd never do them, or I'd make very simplistic ones. It's hard, but totally worth it.

Anyway, thanks again so much for the tutorial. C:

I had a go at manipulating the brushes and etc and came up with a similar image to yours. (except yours is 10 times better than mine )

The tree is a fail, and the grass not far behind it, but im quite happy with how the clouds turned out. What do you think?
