cheers mate i've been trying to draw these fucking things for YEARS!!! but always gave up on em half way through,this is the FIRST timei have ever seen it through and im so pleased with the results still needs lots of work such as adding 3d elements to the armour and a bit more thought on engineering but this is certainly a good start for me at least

lots more to come including a stencil version which is almost finished (and its got legs )

cheers matey yeah thats actualy a side effect of the way i made the colours,it was edited from the blue and red and grey vector version i did originaly (not posted yet) during fiddling with it to get it looking like this it kinda lburred the edges and stuff its well noted and ownt happen on future ones hopefully

lots and lots more planned involving robots now got a stencil version of this one coming soon its almost done,and then im gonna re draw himin entireity with his arms and legs and so adjustments to his armour ive been dreaming of this bloody robot for days!!

I don't know jack about photoshop! I know how to take the pint bucket and fill something in with color. Thats pretty much the extent of my digi painting skills. How weak is that? I wish I knew how to blend colors together so they look natural...like a painting.

you already said that once i swear repeating yourself is a sign of madness ya know

Alright this is how easy it is:

1. open up your source file (an outline or line art)
2, straight away go to layers and DUPLICATE the layer name it LINES
3. select your LINES layer and change the bledning mode from NORMAL to MULTIPLY

multiply mode means that all that is black will be solid and all that is white will be transparent

4. create 3 blank layers in between the BACKGROUND and your LINES layer call these FLATS,1st TONE and 2nd tone keep them in that order

go to your flats layer

5 use the magic wand and select the areas you want for each flat colour and fill them in
6. now go to your 1st TONE layer and use a shade of colour two or threes times darker,and add in some basic shadow
7. now go to your 2ndTONE layer and add a shade 4 or 5 times darker than the flat and fill in the proper shadows

whenever you need to fill in colour make sure you flick back to your FLATS layer and use the wand to select the whole area,then go back to the layer you are colouring on,this means you always have a nice clean selection and your flat colours are never touched.

using multiply on the line layer means your crisp black lines are never touched
keeping each separate colour on a separate layer means you can change your mind and experiment without harming the image at all

so yeah thats a quick run through of digi colour

if you want ,send me an outline and i will set the image up and colour it so you can see what i mean

once you do this ONCE you will see how it all works and get better each time

if you want to see examples of what i have done using this technique then check the early stuff in my gallery check out the predator pic or something for a good example

thats cool part of my new resolutions is to be more effective and not be so fucking lazy so i thought why not start with helping a friend

perhaps a bit too much smoothing

im more worried about the design than the presentation since i can change that way easy this is actualy a variation on the original which i will post as a sheet of all the different ways i did this mech this one is dark but originaly its bright red and blue and grey
