I'm sure most of you are familiar with Sun Wukong ( 孙悟空 ), also known as the Monkey King, Stone Monkey, Keeper of the Heavenly Horses and occasionally Great Sage Equal to Heaven. If you're not, I'll sum it up for you - BEST FICTIONAL CHARACTER EVER CREATED!!!!!!!!!!

One thing that's kind of been gnawing at me is how Wukong has always been depicted throughout the ages as a cheerful, jumpy kind of character. While this is very entertaining, it does NOT add up to a good protagonist. So I got thinking, and I realized that he was:

1. Born without parents
2. Looked down upon or feared by everyone and treated as a social outcast simply because he's a monkey
3. Burned alive for 49 days
4. Trapped under a freakin' mountain for 500 years
5. Punished with excrutiating pain everytime he shows the slightest signs of emotion or disobediance.

As you can see, all these factors add up to a lot of potential angst. So I decided that in my fanart, I was going to portray him as the serious character that he could have been.

Shading took a ridiculous amount of time, especially since I did it with a pacer. As you can see, I gave up on the shading a bit when I got to the legs, which is why the lower half seems to be a bit flimsy. And no, I did not bother to colour the entire sky in, I coloured a small patch and then clone stamped the rest. Pose was completely ripped off Jet Li's from the Hero posters. Savvy?
