Description

For context, this is not Afiel who's laying there scraped and bruised and smeared in banana juice beneath palm trees. Nah, it's his older brother Seraphiel. (Basically the only way seraph can be simultaneously incorporated into the story alongside Afiel where they're mortal. As Seraph is technically just the arrogant, prideful, and utterly snobby past version of Afiel.) Anyways, it is incredibly rare - if not entirely unheard of - for seafolk to go on land, as most merfolk can't walk or withstand the heat and rough dry terrain. Octopus Willow can, however, thanks to the heavily scarred bottoms of her tentacles from all her years spent hunting that give her more tolerance to land terrain. She basically swirls her tentacles up into two bouncy "legs" to wobbly walk on to explore the small islands dotting the areas where they reside, usually dragging Afiel behind her on a huge palm leaf chariot. From her excursions, she and Afiel both discovered the joys of fruit. Or Afiel discovered it anyways, as Willow is a carnivore and can't eat anything except meat. Fruit is something that, for herbivores like Afiel and his bro Seraphiel, is practically candy. Afiel, while loving the stuff, has a modest amount of self control.

Seraph, however, does not. And once he gets a taste of the fruits Willow and Afiel bring back below the surface, he gets positively HOOKED, eating them by the bunch as Willow brings them down. As time goes by, his addiction only gets worse, to the point where he gains weight and causes his concerned younger brother Afiel to ask Willow to cut Seraph off. She does, but this does nothing to stop the utterly addicted Serpahiel. After flooding his home with banana juice and subsequently being evicted from the immense health hazards of such a thing, he discovers the secret little island on his own. In the absolute height of his addiction, he drags himself on shore and sustains serious cuts and bruises to both his tail and upper torso as he blindly seeks out bananas. He even risks drying out for a time in his banana craze state. While herbivores likes Seraph and Afiel can consume bananas, they are hardly meant to survive on them alone. So essentially Seraph begins to poison himself in his pure banana consumption as his body rejects the garbage he's shoveling into it. Dehydrated, delirious, and nearly dead from the banana overdose, his life is saved by a shocked Afiel and Willow as they stumble across him on a little romantic stroll. Least to say, they get him to an undersea hospital and put him through rehab. I suppose you could say he had a...fructose overdose? XD Eh eh?

Moral of the story: Portion control.

The other moral of this story: fish and bananas go horrible together in more ways than one.

Dogfish Junior is NEVER going to let the poor guy live this one down...

This is quite an interesting story.  So are they made for a lower sugar type of consumption?

Yup! Filter feeders like Afiel and Seraphiel are meant to eat seaweed and krill. Not nanners.

I'm pretty sure high doses of sugar to anything puts the body in overdrive

I don't doubt it! Otherwise diabetic comas wouldn't exist. Maybe that's what he's in right now.

Yeah.  What compound in bananas are toxic to the people he is apart of other than high sugar?

To be honest, I haven't entirely figured that out yet. But just look at it this way, he's eating something that he's not evolutionarily supposed to eat. He's an herbivore. But an undersea herbivore. He's meant to actively consume low sugar and low fat things such as seaweed, kelp, and krill, not land foods like bananas. Just like we eat processed things that contain artificial flavors and hard to pronounce chemicals that we're not naturally made to consume. We can eat it, but it's harmful in great amounts. Just like he can eat it, but it becomes harmful in large amounts.

That makes more sense.  What land fruits can they eat?  Were these people at one point land dwellers or always in sea?

They were always merpeople. But, they can eat an entire array of fruits. It's like candy for them. The only things they really couldn't be able to eat - the Satinfish merpeople anyways - would be meat. Willow is a predator, however, so as Afiel sat down snacking on a banana, Willow chowed down on some monkey brains. Sounds gross, but the same rules apply. Willy can eat red meat, but it isn't a good idea for her to live on solely that.

That's like saying we were always humans.  Humans came on Earth from an extinct ancestor.  But I get what you mean.

That's really good logic.  Nice job on constructing rules for diets on your ocs to make it seem more natural. :3

Thanks! And they evolved from the same ocean microbe soup as humans did. But they never evolved for land completely. Humans do exist in the world alongside them. Basically the creatures they evolved from remained amphibious. Always straddling the line between water and land. Never choosing one side.

Nice.
How much do humans impact them?

They're a merely rumored species thus far in regards to human knowledge of them. To be honest, I haven't completely worked out human/ merfolk relations yet. So my answer to your question may be subject to change in the future.
