Description Inspired by the speed modeling sessions now taking place at cgtalk.com. For more info, check out the site - there's pretty much nothing else to say except that I'm working on the rest of the robot.

C&C always appreciated.

the use of 3d planes (not airplanes, those simple square objects)
I apply very bright white materials to them and turn radiosity on. This way the white planes reflect in the object nicely but also provide the light for the scene.

Another good piece of you! I'm wondering how you render the 'sketched' images on the left bottom...

Amazing!
Soo tactile - they would be the most tech type of snowboarding glove on the planet if jus tweaked a bit.
Excellent job on this bro! Especially when considering it was "speed modeling" ?!!!!
Greeeat job !!!!

Personally I agree with ~ironsheik although I may not be the best 3d artist in the world... I'm still relatively new... This doesn't grab hold of me.

Don't get me wrong it has style! A lot more style than most!
But there is something missing.

But as a n00b what do I know?

No, I used planes with luminous material and radiosity turned on.

Hey cinema4d buddddy... how'd you go about getting the super shiny reflections??? It's driving me batty... can't wait to see the rest of the robot if it's anything like your other work then it's gonna be great!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ethan- In reply to se55 [2004-01-25 05:12:30 +0000 UTC]

First of all you need a reflective material. I always use a little fresnel in the reflection channel. Secondly you need an environment. To get super shinny reflections try placing simple planes surrounding your object with a luminous material so that it appears completely white.

You can tweak the planes to get different colors out of the reflection.

As with all superskilled 3D modelers I am amazed with lightning. The hand should have at least 4-5 servo-motors in each segment of the finger and the elastic "skin" or else 3 fingers is not enough to do stuff.

skittle [2004-01-24 21:02:15 +0000 UTC]

Nice, clean modeling. Altho I don't think three fingers would help a robot out if it were to pick something up, especially the middle one 'cause it's a little fatter than the others. Still tho, great modeling, and I like the reflections. nice job

ironsheik [2004-01-24 20:02:18 +0000 UTC]

Um, wtf? 8 favorites so far? It's just an HDRI reflected hand that doesn't really look all that functionable. I can see deviantart hasn't seen much good 3d in awhile. They just love stuff that looks shiny. Anyways, the only thing I really have to say is stretch joints out so there is more flexibility or tone down the thickness.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ethan- In reply to ironsheik [2004-01-25 04:19:50 +0000 UTC]

Actually, it isn't HDRI, it's a radiosity setup which consists of four luminous planes set to different color and intensity - I did put a little work into the lighting.

Functional, not really... my focus of this modeling excercise was to create fluid form, I consider this more of a sculpture than a product.

I agree with you, devart has not seen much good 3d, there just aren't many quality 3d artists here with the exception of a few common names.

Thanks for the c&c
