Description I shot this the night before last. If there's one thing I love about Arizona it's the storms that we get during monsoon season. I was on my way to bed and got horribly addicted to try and capture the lightening. It was streaking through the sky like you wouldn't beleive and you'd think with the quantity it would be easy to phpotograph. Well it's not. One shot would be blown out or the lightening would strike as soon as I my shutter closed after a 15 second exposure, I took probably 75 photos and shook my fist at the sky to do what I told it too, I think it was just teasing me. So out of all the shots I took this is one of 2 that actually came out. I wasn't going to post it but my other half said it was awesome and that I should be proud because many people go there whole life trying to capture lightening in a good manor and fail. So here it is. This is what the sky looks like from my back porch.

Lightning strikes are extremely hard to shoot. That strike hits almost perfectly in that golden mean. And, the silhouette of the treesβ€”dark contrasting the light,-powerful, powerful shot.
Way to go.

yes, and I see that you got 2 great photos from the same location. How lucky is that, perhaps you should play the lottery.

Ya I know what ya mean, I have the worst luck gambling too. My first time playing Bingo I got stopped by the cops on the way home. Hack, hack, cough, cough. and I think I have a defective lung now as a result.

Gorgeoussss. I go out to Phoenix occasionally to visit my uncle. We went this past summer, and the second night we were there, was one of the greatest monsoon storms I've seen, yet. I stood out on the patio [and the balcony, once the rain stopped] for four hours trying to catch what I could. 700+ shots later, I only ended up with around 40 pictures that had some sort of lightning in them. Pfft.

ANYWAY! This is a great shot. Haha, nice work.

Thanks...yeah it's not all that easy to do and I'm still learning. If there's something I'll miss from Phoenix it's ththe monsoons. They were the coolest. I like openning the garage door and just hanging out watching it. Seriously good stuff. I took a ton of shots too. I found it best to just hold the shutter open and once I saw the lightenning flash then release my finger. it still took a lot though

yeah, i know how you feel... i too, took around 100 shots the other night, with only 2 keepers...theres just too many damn streetlights in this city... im definately gonna try and grab some good monsoon photos this summer... its just too damn hard to find a good safe place to shoot from....

I know that all too well. I ran around last night and gave up photographing as soon as I made it 3 feet out the front door. I put the camera inside and ran around in the weather being a kid for an hour or so after that. I highly advise it

i remember living there as a child, and i loved the lightning there. if you ever party in the desert, you have to be careful of the flash floods. Florida gets the same crazy storms but more hardcore. less lightning, but we do get lightning storms. your description tells me exactly the answers to my questions about photographing lightning. just take alot of pictures!!!

i dont really remember any fires,, we have those here every couple years. When i was out there last october we drove back from san diego to phoenix through the desert and thats when i realized that i want to camp out in the desert one day!! that would be so cool. you could see hundreds of lights coming from motorcycles and four wheelers. cool!
