Description Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

I'm writing out of concern for your son Charlie. Since he first started in my class I have noticed odd tendencies in his behaviour. I know Charlie is a special boy, but the way these tendencies develop is beginning to worry me. He seems to be having troubles communicating with others. He rarely plays with the other children and does not respond when I speak to him. His writing is beginning to stray from the alphabet. Last week he even refused to partake in morning prostration! I took him to see the school nurse but he remained silent for the entire time and did not subject himself to examination. I therefore ask you to bring Charlie to a doctor in order to find out what is causing these problems.

With regards,
Miss Edna Umber, Umbrellium Primary School

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

After the examination of your son, we have been able to establish that he is not suffering from any apparent physical illness or dysfunction. There appears to be nothing wrong with his senses, and even though he is unwilling to talk, his vocal cords are in perfect condition. His weight and height gain follow a steady and normal curve. He shows no signs of abnormal brain functions, and his joints and muscles function flawlessly. We will commence to examine the collected blood and urine samples to confirm that there is no genetic or chemical disorder. If your son's communication difficulties persist, I advise you to take him to a psychologist for further analysis.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Erlenmeyer Umbrel, Saint Umbra's Hospital

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

Throughout the session together with your son, he failed to respond to any of my attempts to communicate with him. He seemed, however, to have no difficulties whatsoever solving mental tasks and scored well on the intelligence test. He shows no signs of trauma, shock or psychosis, but he clearly has issues with communication. It is clear from his behaviour that he acknowledges the presence of others, yet he seems unable to comprehend language and common customs. Unless he is in need of hearing aid, I fear that he is suffering from a mental disturbance. I will await Dr. Umbrel's results before proceeding, however if the results displayed are insignificant, I must insist that your son be placed in treatment.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Mementer Umbric, Saint Umbra's Psychological Department

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

We have received the results from the blood and urine samples collected, and we have been able to notice a recurring error in your son's DNA. Even though his phenotype clearly displays that he has the appearance of an umbrella, his genetic code reveals that this is in fact not the case. Your son's DNA, although it is highly functional, differs so greatly from that of any normal umbrella that we have concluded that he is not part of our species. Our genetic records of you show that this is through no fault of yours, and must have been the result of some mutation or other. If you wish to discuss the matter for therapeutic purposes, I will gladly refer you back to Dr. Umbric.
I have spoken to a number of prominent colleagues about what measures should be taken concerning your son, and we have dismissed the possibility for him to adapt for our society. We are however interested in permission from you to return him to the hospital for more advanced research in isolation. I am afraid there is no way in which we can alter your son's condition, but nevertheless it would provide an immense medical advantage to study him.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Erlenmeyer Umbrel, Saint Umbra's Hospital

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

Having received Dr. Umbrel's test results, my offer of treatment for your son is not only imminent, but on the verge of mandatory. I am in agreement with Dr. Umbrel on the account of not integrating your son into society, since it is clear that he will have great difficulties in adapting to our modern values, but I realise that his need for professional care remains. It is also plausible that he is in fact, as Dr. Umbrel describes it, β€œan immense medical advantage”. I recommend strongly that you submit him to institutional care immediately. As little knowledge as we have about the manners in which he could develop, it is important that he is kept in isolation, under our control and influence. Since we fear that you as parents are incapable of giving him the necessary treatment, we ask you to place him in our custody.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Mementer Umbric, Saint Umbra's Psychological Department

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

You have still not replied to the letter you received two weeks ago. I realise that handing over your son to the authorities is a difficult procedure, but I can assure you that your son is safe in our hands, and will be able to lead a much more dignified life is he given appropriate treatment. At present, we are too uncertain of his state to judge whether he is even recommendable to leave the home. Due to this, he is deemed a threat to those around him, including yourselves. We plea to you, for his own health and the public's, to hand him over to us as soon as possible. Unless you reply within another week, I will be forced to contact the municipality. This will result in your son's prohibition to return to his education unless he is subjected to rehabilitating treatment. Try to consider what is best for him.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Mementer Umbric, Saint Umbra's Psychological Department

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

You have chosen not to submit your son Charlie Umbrella to treatment after receiving a professional diagnosis of him being socially inept. We hereby withdraw his license to attend school in this municipality until he has undergone treatment. Unless he is submitted to treatment within three months, we are forced to contact higher authorities. Should your son display any signs of aggressive behaviour during his time, he will be taken into immediate custody by force.

Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Wembley Bermeu, Umbrellium Municipal Council

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

It has been three months since you received our previous letter, and we must once again remind you of the significance of isolating your son. He may prove a danger to himself and to his surroundings. You must be aware that you will be legally charged with any damage he causes. Additionally, we have been informed by Saint Umbra's Hospital that you have denied your son further examination, even though this is clearly necessary. One last time, we insist that you hand over your son to custody care. National authorities have been contacted, and we shall hereafter take no further part in this issue.

Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Wembley Bermeu, Umbrellium Municipal Council

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

I am writing on behalf of the National Council. We have learned from the Umbrellium Municipal Council and Saint Umbra's Hospital the circumstances surrounding your son, and we declare that he is not suitable to remain in your care. He is a societal hazard and in need of immediate attention. Since it is impossible by scientific means to discover any traces of umbrellic tendencies in your son, we request that he be rejected from the umbrellic society with all speed, for the love of God in Heaven.
A crew will arrive within two weeks to bring your son into custody. Please take the time to arrange what you deem necessary for this event. Failure to comply will result in legal measures.

Yours sincerely,
Mr. Gremlin Plypar, Umbrellic National Council

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

The National Council are becoming impatient with your lack of cooperation. When our troops arrived, it was clear that you had blocked your home of all entry. This did not only produce enormous costs for the National Council as our crew had to be sent back, but also indicates that you clearly do not respect the rules of our society. Your son is taken into custody for his own well-being, and in keeping him from us, you only cause deterioration of his already fragile condition. We strongly advice you to hand him over willingly, or we will be forced to break into your home. We hope that you realise that these matters are not of a personal nature, but highly important to national security, that your son is a significant key to the progress of science, and that if you do not choose to obey, we cannot be deemed responsible for any injuries begotten during the handing-over of your son. If you are not willing to act in accordance with this, we are forced to take the matter to legal prosecution.
Please come to your senses.

Yours sincerely,
Mr. Gremlin Plypar, Umbrellic National Council

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

You hereby stand accused for the failure to submit your son, Charlie Umbrella, to national care, despite the evident signs of necessity for this procedure. Your son has been officially deemed a health and security hazard to the community, and in harbouring him, you risk, not only your own lives, but also the lives of others.
You are called to attend Umbrellium High Court at nine hundred hours on Monday the thirty-first of February. If you do not attend, this will result in further legal consequences.

Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Sachel Paragua, Umbrellic High Court

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

You have not complied with the orders received from the Umbrellic High Court, and did not attend the time appointed to you. You are therefore sentenced to indefinite imprisonment until you are willing to cooperate. You and your son are asked to report to the legal authorities, and in lack of this, you will be collected shortly.

Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Sachel Paragua, Umbrellic High Court

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

By committing to the choice of escaping the servants of the National Council, you are henceforth regarded criminals to the law and threats to national security. Please present yourself to the legal authorities without delay, and we will not issue orders to harm you in the capture.

Yours sincerely,
Mr. Rembrandt Eller, Umbrellic Police Department

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

You have disregarded our orders to hand over your son, and you have not yet attended the Umbrellic High Court, nor committed yourselves to the law. It has been six months since your escape, and we have reason to believe that you are planning acts of terrorism on the umbrellic society. We have issued permission to kill on sight.

Yours sincerely,
Mr. Rembrandt Eller, Umbrellic Police Department

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

The Umbrellic High Court has judged by majority that your indifference to our national laws has rendered you unworthy of trial by the event of your capture. You have been sentenced for various acts of terrorism, and appear before the law on pain of death.

Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Sachel Paragua, Umbrellic High Court

~

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella,

Responsible as you are for causing national manslaughter and general disorder, your compliance with our death sentence pleases us. Your continuing failure in handing over your son to the authorities, however, forces us to sentence you to burn in the fires of Hell until his location is unfolded.

Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Sachel Paragua, Umbrellic High Court

Oh wow. You have some good insight. Even if a child is just an introvert, he is often labled as antisocial, and supposedly should be in therapy. This piece is pretty scary, because it lets us see the road we're on.

This is a very accurate portrait of what we may become, I fear. I've seen kids being diagnosed with something that they clearly don't have. Over-labeling everything and blowing everything up needlessly. And in addition, it's true that social ineptness is not very acceptable in our society.
This is one special piece. I'm adding it to favorites.

I just wanted to bring to your attention that a user on myspace has been plagiarizing work from many authors on deviantART, myself included, and playing them off as her own.

I'm sorry to say that she has taken this from you as well.

The blog in which it's written can be found here: [link]

I have contacted her on several occasions, as others here on dA have. She still hasn't taken a lot of them down, so I have contacted the myspace legal copyright team and am working to get, at the very least, her privileges rescinded.

I'm sorry to bring this bad news.
Your work is meant to shine.

Very well written. This is so simple, yet so complex. I can sense the amount of time it took to produce this was long...

I think the symbolism of humans in the umbrellas is brilliant; original.
Also, the fact that this all starts from a note from school is a nice element. It shows how blown out of proportions things can and often do get.
Another great touch is how impersonal the letters all are. There was a distance arising from the very first note; and it grew with each. It shows how uncaring and inhumane people can grow with power.

The intertwined elements of almost silliness and horror make this both interesting and balanced; as well as very, very powerful.

Or to put it in simple, common English... "Brilliant and haunting."

It is sad how we treat the people who don't fit in with us lol. i mean, some people can say all they want about being nice to everyone, but as humans, we do tend to stay away from people different from us. Its shown in the story with the whole "You're child has been deemed socially inept. We don't want him near us" thing.

Mr. and Mrs. Umbrella seem like good parents though lol.
