Description So....I really like the look of this upcoming Sonic Boom. Knuckles looks ridiculous, almost to the level of Bulk Bicep parody of body-builders, but other than that admittedly large issue, I really, really like the designs. Somehow, the artists managed to keep all the defining features of the character's outfits, yet remake them in an entirely new way with minimal additional clothes, except for Tails, and I love what they came up with. Amy's new outfit in particular I love - still a short, red, sleeveless dress with white details, still white gloves with bracelets, still red and white boots, same quills, but an entirely new (and I'd say much improved) look.

So I wanted to see if I could do something similar with the Freedom Fighters. The Sonic Boom art seems to be slightly more subdued in colors than the current art, which I think goes well with a sort of SatAM-Archie-hybrid color scheme. Rotor's gloves are a reference to his red shoes/belt in SatAM. Bunnie's cyborg parts are a design that I've been wanting to try out for years but never found an opportunity until now. I also wanted to try giving them different heights since the Sonic Boom characters seem to be, but Rotor's not as tall as I wanted since I didn't leave enough space at the top of the page for him >_< Just pretend he's closer in height to Knux. Sally should be just about Sonic's height, although measurement-wise, it's a bit off.

I don't feel I entirely captured the whole minimal-additions feel, and I moved some colors around (like the gold from Antoine's epaulettes now on his shoes), which doesn't seem to be what the Sonic Boom artists did, and I see some mistakes, like forgetting to color the inside of Bunnie's ear. I also may change some things if I ever draw them like this again (for example, still not sure I should have given Sally gloves or that they should have been blue) but for a fast, one-day attempt at a redesign, I'm pretty happy with it.

Now lets just see if the show and game end up not too AoStH-like for me....

well they don't look that different, but I like these ideas.

How I miss seeing these guys on TV. And in all honesty, I wish we could see them again just for old-time sake. But oh well. This is pretty nice work here.

Yeah, I'd like that too, but then again, I'm not sure I trust Sega or most others to actually portray them well or get their characters right. ...I guess I'm just a pessimist about it....

Gosh, I just love this.  Like, so much.  Never mind that, as usual, you achieve a fantastically rich sense of color and texture with your pencils, or the perfect precision of your lines.  The designs themselves are just very clever, able to fit nicely into "Boom"'s aesthetic without sacrificing the personality of the characters in the slightest.  I've kind of gushed about this already to you, but if you don't mind, I'mma do it again. x3

* Rotor: Probably the trickiest of the four to work with overall, thanks to his original design being something of an odd duck.  Even so, I appreciate that you've kept a lot of the original in there (right down to his trademark backwards cap) while giving it just enough of a "Boom" touch to make it feel fresh; not only does it really look like the athletic tape on his feet fits right in, but the use of his old-school color scheme as the colors for the gloves is a clever touch.  I also quite like his posing here; kind of friendly, but also kind of bashful.  Very "Rotor", to me. ^_^

* Sally: Love it.  Love everything about it.  I love the confident pose, I love the look of the gloves, I especially love the look of the vest; the sleek way it curves along her body, the added buttons, and the way it just plain feels right for Sally to wear.  It looks like the outfit she'd need to best do her Freedom Fighting, y'know?  I agree with fitted boots might've made more sense, but at the same time the look you went with for the boots is so pleasant to the eyes I'm not entirely sure I can bring myself to care.

* Bunnie: While I'm not sure about the athletic tape around her torso (literally; I don't entirely know if I like it, but it feels like it might make sense for the design so I appreciate that), I still love this design a lot too.  The redesign of her robot limbs is excellent, combining just the right amount of detail and elegance to create this new look and feel that clicks wonderfully.  That ribbon on her leg is also a brilliant touch; even without knowing what the full idea behind it is, it just works as a great visual, and one that speaks to a greater depth of character.

* Antoine: ALL the choices here are great choices, IMO.  The sleeker version of his classic uniform, the belt-and-scabbard on his waist, the dueling gloves...I particularly like moving his golden shoulder-pads down to his boots.  Unique footwear has long been a big part of the "Sonic" aesthetic, and giving Ant his own pair of immediately identifiable boots is a great choice, possibly one of the cleverest in terms of making the FF's "fit" the new look.

So yeah.  Four designs, four completely successful takes on old favorites in a new style that successfully blends both together.  What's not to love? <3

This ego doesn't mind extra gushing >_>

Rotor: Yes, definitely the hardest to work with, but I really can't justify changing too much of his build, partly because I don't think all the larger characters need to suddenly be muscled, but also partly because I'm not sure *what else* to do with him that would still look like the same character! His posing, however, I think I lifted from a way earlier sketch in my scraps...I *think*, I didn't actually look at it, but this is what I remember drawing.

Sally: She, and that vest, is really the reason I did this whole picture. I was tempted to just draw Sally and forget the rest, but I really couldn't bring myself to do just her. I was tempted to make the vest a short-sleeved shrug/jacket, and I did like the look while I was playing around with the design, but I decided to keep it a vest because Amy's new dress is still sleeveless and other basic outfit details like that are also unchanged in the Boom designs. Her boots I admit I'm not thrilled about, in part because I typically do prefer slimmer boots for Sally, but all of the designs seem to have the loose cuff or socks, which is why I went with that here. But if I can come up with something else, I'll likely go with that if I ever draw these again.

Bunnie: The wrapping around her torso is for support, and I really debated whether or not I should have it come up higher. Really, it should, and I don't want to compromise what makes sense for aesthetics, but I couldn't figure out how to keep her design/coloring similar AND do that. So I admit, it needs some work. Her legs though are an Archie-inspired design I've been wanting an excuse to draw for a long time, and the bow has no real significance except that it's a reference to her typical blue sash in SatAM.

Antoine: His design really had no planning; I just drew what I thought would look good as I went, so I'm surprised with how much I like it! I was afraid it would just look thrown together. And I'm also very happy with his shoes, although as I mentioned, I'm not sure moving the gold details from his shoulders to his feet is really in keeping with the design changes in Sonic Boom, but I do like it...

Heh heh...good t'know, 'cuz I confess to being very OK with more gushing in the future. x3

* Yeah, the fact that even Robotnik has gone from heavy to kind of muscular at this point strikes me as weird; one imagines when Big the Cat next shows up, he'll be sporting that Storm the Albatross-style physique too, as the whole franchise seems to have beocme extremely fond of it lately for some reason. XD;  Interesting about the pose, too.  I kind of hope you find 'n' post that old unfinished pic now too.

* Well first off, kudos to you for deciding Sally just isn't complete without her team; I think that's a good insight. ;3  Secondly, I can see how this'd be the one to inspire the whole pic, since, as previously stated, I think it's freaking awesome.  I actually hadn't considered the fact that Sally's boot design is in keeping with all the other designs in "Boom!", too, so that's a pretty good point there.  Perhaps, as an alternative, you can do something more like Link's boots (cosplaysky.com/media/catalog/p… for any potential future pics?

* Ah yes, the age old debate of Aesthetics Vs. Practicality in character design...I know it well. x3;  I'm sure you'll figure out something, though!  You've demonstrated a pretty keen ability for that sort of creative problem-solving in the past, IMO, and I think if you ever did decide to revisit this concept you'd be able to do the same here.  The fact that the bow is based on her old SatAM sash, meanwhile, only heightens my love of it. <3

* Hey, it works as a whole, and it feels in keeping with the "Boom" aesthetic, as far as I'm concerned, so I think it all pans out.  Go figure you just came up with it on the fly; I never really would have guessed, because it feels so visually coherent with the rest of the team and the "Boom" aesthetic as a whole.  But I s'pose that's just you bein' your usual mad-talented self. <3

also i am typing this as we are literally sitting right next to each other in the same room together and i cannot decide if that is weird or hilarious >w>

hehehehe, I suppose it is a little weird that you were right here righting this, but then, I suppose it's also a little weird that I'm replying like this now instead of right then in person XD

And thank you for the compliment ^_^;; I guess I just really like designing character outfits although I'm not sure I'm actually all that good at it...especially for male characters. At least these give me something to work off of.

I considered boots like those for Sally (actually, I can't see the image, but I think I know what you'd meant), but I decided not to because it's similar a style I see often enough on her that I wanted something different. I like what they did with Amy's boots, but I don't want to just copy that. So, still thinking about it...

Rotor's pose: elisto.deviantart.com/art/unfi… in the middle, in faint pencil, and highly unfinished. Apparently it never entirely made it onto paper, and I just remembered what I was trying to do as if I had actually done it hahaha

Well, hey, maybe we're both weird in just the right way. X3

I say you're plenty good at it for the record, male or female; at the very least, your love of it shines through clear as day in the obvious care and thought that went into each design. <3

Stupid useless dA linking HTML...anyway!  I can definitely appreciate wanting to change things up for Sally, though boots are definitely one of the trickier items to really customize in a way that feels personalized and fresh.  Still, I don't doubt you're up for the challenge!

Yep, there it is!  Interestingly, the design you use there-drawing elements from his pre-Reboot Archie look but adding in some touches of its own, from what I can tell-feels like it too could've been a suitably "Boom"-styled Rotor (or would we have to revert to calling a "Boom"!Rotor "Boomer", come to think of it? >w>).

thanks for your confidence ^_^

And hmm...I don't know, calling Boom!Rotor "Boomer" again might get confusing! Appropriate, but confusing! As for that old sketch, it was really meant to be just the bomber-jacket-Rotor, and any differences were just me not quite getting it >_>

Hm, I really like these designs! I do think that fitted boots would look better on Sally and that the gloves could perhaps be replaced with athletic wrap (like a kickboxer, to keep her fingers free to operate devices more easily while still bracing the joints), but overall I think it fits the Boom aesthetic quite nicely! I especilly love Antoine's boots and the decoration on Bunnie's leg. c:

Elisto In reply to StarlitSkvader [2014-02-13 23:02:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I considered what you suggest for the athletic wrap for Sally, but I was afraid it would look too much like what I did with Bunnie. I still like the idea though, so I don't know, I may come back to this eventually. As for her boots, I typically prefer more fitted ones as well, but I couldn't figure out how to make that work in this style since it looks like in the Sonic Boom designs, everyone has loose socks/cuffs and I didn't want to just give her the commonly-drawn regular boots with a cuff at the top (like Antoine's normal boots). Maybe if I put some more thought into it I can come up with something else because I'm not as happy with her boots as I thought I would be.

I seem to be off in la la land and don't know what this "Sonic Boom" thing everyone is raving about is, but Imma check it out and ZOMG you're right Knuckles design changes are... well, surprising! And slightly scary! But it does in fact look quite cool on the whole. And I totally agree with you about Amy's design, I love it too.

Anyway, I think your SatAM updated designs are good, and I'm wondering about the meaning of all the little things you added... the ribbon around Bunnie's leg, mainly. The modifications to boots all work great, I think, and I like the compromises you've made in adapting them to something like the game's design. I never really thought about how cute they'd look with smaller irises/pupils. I think you did a good job keeping them true to their original designs while also adding features to them. I guess there are a few things I'm unsure of. Maybe the asymmetrical foot bandage wraps on Rotor look a little busy to my eye? Might just be that I'm not used to it, though, so don't take it too seriously, I also feel like it's good to add something to his feet. Overall I really like them, in any case.

Thanks!

I did try to match the art style a bit, like the smaller pupils, so I'm happy you noticed, but it makes Bunnie looks weird I think. As for the bow, I just added it because I could ^_^ No real reason, except that the blue is a reference to her belt, which I didn't give her (although you can't tell anyway). As for Rotor, eh, his design gave me the most trouble and I'm not sure I like it. Really, there's things on all of them that I'm not sure of. As for the athletic tape, it seems to just be a thing with the Sonic Boom characters, and I didn't intend for it to look asymmetrical...so...I guess pretend it's not? haha

Sonic Boom is a new Sonic cartoon and game (series?) that's being produced I think for Cartoon Network as an additional continuity in the franchise. It looks interesting, certainly different. There are some trailers out, and here some articles about it: The first one has the picture I used as a reference for this.
