Description
This was my first of 2 submissions to Shout! Factory for their requests for fanart for the Sonic the Hedgehog DVD case. It didn't get picked, so I figured I'd show it off here. I was in a bit of a rush to do it, so I see a lot of stuff I don't like about it now, but hey, it was my first Sonic fanart in a long time. I've improved greatly since this haha. Looking back at this now, I have to question why anyone even likes it!Characters are copyright SEGA and DiC.

At least you knew that they were taking in art submissions for the DVD set. If I stayed with FUS long enough, maybe I would have known as well. Meh. I noticed Alison left the club. I like how you even used acrylics in your picture since I don't really use paints with my work. I was thinking of taking a painting class with my teacher before he retires from our college.

Yeah, it's too bad the fanart contest wasn't more widely advertised. At least, I don't remember it being...
I would certainly encourage artists to take a painting class if they can. More than any other medium, learning to paint taught me the most about creating (2D) art in general.

The background truely looks like from the show. I just started working with acrylics and I just don't know how to make thise nice colour transitions as they or you did

Thanks, yeah, the characters came out terrible! But I am still proud of the main tower (hence my icon). Acrylics were the first medium I seriously learned, although I'm a bit rust with it now. The color gradients are a little challenging because of how quickly the paint dries. I essentially started out by doing shadows and such as progressively darker blocks of color...maybe one day I'll dig out my old practice pictures and scan them. Now, to get the blended look, I don't really know what I'm doing anymore, so I end up just putting a lot of layers until I get it right. Something like the background buildings are easier because they're small, so the paint stays wet enough for me to finish. Plus, I basically cheated a bit and used just a base color with white highlights and black shadows. Monochromatic, but works fine for the main tower in the distance I think.

This was really well done. You got the show's aesthetic spot-on. I'm sorry they didn't pick it though. I actually drew a pic for the Sonic CD art contest SEGA was holding, but I never got my entry sent out in time, and I can't find that masterful work of art either.

Aw, well that's too bad! As for this picture, looking at it now, I'm kind of glad it didn't get picked. I'm still proud of the background, but the characters...eh, I think I've improved a bit in copying that style.

Oh man, I have that DVD set and I think yours would have looked great on it! It's cool that they featured so much fanart though. Even if you aren't completely happy with it, I think it really captures the look of the show. Especially that you painted it. *___* Loving that background.

Wow! The charaters look just jike in the show. My only critque is that Sally's head, although it's supposted to be big, looks a bit too big in this pic, but other than that, this is excelent!

Yeah, the proportions are a bit off in some places. This was the first real piece of Sonic fanart I'd done in years so I was a little out of practice. I'm really mostly proud of the main building in the background.
