I'm buying some hydrostone for some pieces for a custom game idea of my own, what finish did you use? How did you get the black ones to look so iron-ish and the white ones to seem like ivory? Your post is already a great inspiration, any advice on finishes will be like gold. Great work, I look forward to seeing your future work.

For the black ones, I added black cement pigment to the hydrostone before casting, then I dry-brushed opalescent silver pigment on top of that. A high-gloss varnish was applied on the very top layer. The result looks almost exactly like hematite.
For the ivory ones, I added no color to the cement before casting. After casting I used a tan-colored cement pigment mixed into a very thin mixture of varnish and water. I dunked the pieces quickly into this, let them drain and dry, and then finished them with the same high-gloss varnish as the black ones.

Nifty.... Do you still have the molds?

Eclectixx In reply to NobleFiveJorge [2011-07-31 23:15:27 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I still have them, but they are starting to get worn so I don't use them any more for fear of wearing them out. When I was casting them the set was selling for around $900 - $1200 per set. I may create a second run some day by cleaning up castings made from the old molds in order to create new 2nd generation molds.

I'll be contacting you when I have money and enough of it to drop 1K on a chess set.
Seriously though... I will be contacting you in a few years.

I'll make a post here if I do sell them again. Copying here what I just typed for SculptorTim; my master moulds have worn out. There are 16 pawns to a set, so the pawn moulds wore out very quickly. If there is enough demand I may make new moulds for a second release.
