EDITED:The finished version of the Equestrian Flag for the headcanon book, painted in acrylics.
Despite some of the artwork being referenced off of some of the stuff established from the show (for example, the flags) I didn't want anything I haven't drawn included in the book. So, this is my version of the Equestrian Flag, complete with a different alicorn style to better fit how I portray them and 40 stars even to represent the 40 Provinces of Equestria. The alicorn sisters in this also have some distinction between them instead of them being exact copies other than color.
The completion of the book is getting nearer and nearer. I'm like 70% done with the artwork and 95% done with the text. As I've said before, I'm really hoping I finish before Christmas, but there's no promises. o3o
I'm actually planning on perhaps making a small actual flag out of this image as an additional feature to the Limited Edition of the book, but I'll have to see.

I'm not entirely sure why it would, considering the fact that I'm pretty sure, after Luna's possession/corruption, Celestia would make sure the name of her sister stayed clear and would paint the picture of Nightmare Moon and Princess Luna as two separate entities (which they technically are in my headcanon) to the public.
How you see it in your headcanon may be different, of course.

Interesting... I must say I think the horns in this case could do with some lines that separate them from the heads of the alicorns, particularly with Celestia whose base is a bit wide. Also Luna's wings look a bit wonky in comparison to Celestias....
But that's really all I can nitpick really. Those pencil marks a bit unfortunate but eh, that's traditional art for ya, erasers never work like you want them to and the sketches wills stubbornly cling to the page XD.

Interesting points; I perhaps could have added lines to the horns, but I wanted to keep it at least similar to how the original looked; there weren't too many lines on the sisters themselves, horn included. As for the pencil lines, I actually could have easily hid them but I didn't paint the paint on opaque enough. Aw well; I actually think it adds more character to the image though... or in other words I'm a little too lazy to go back and correct it. xD

Love that you put some distinction between the sisters ^w^ I sort of get the feeling that the cyan is a little too bright but, eh. It's just my opinion.

Considering that, first I saw was that the top one might have represented a male alicorn instead.
How would you portray the difference between the female and the male alicorn?

There really isn't a difference other than you having to look at the face, especially because strong jaw/long snout does not automatically mean male.Β I'm not going to give them muchΒ sexual dimorphismΒ when horses don't actually have that.

Though another question. I know that the Heartswarming Eve episode showed the Equestrian Flag, albeit the modern one, when do you think the modern flag came into play? After Luna returned or perhaps even before she was banished?

The design of the Equestrian Flag the country uses to this day came into play after the defeat of Discord. In my headcanon, Equestria was originally called the United Tribes of Equestria after the Hearth's Warming Eve thing, but during the whole fiasco of Discord, the country nearly fell apart. The first time the Princess Sisters showed up in history was during Discord's rampage across the country, and it was his eventual defeat that brought the leaders to the decision to officially unite the country under the rule of the Sisters, of which the new design of the flag came into play.
