Description I was diagnosed with Type-2 Diabetes earlier this year. It's under control with pills and diet (no insulin shots yet).

I created the blood drop in Illustrator, but I used the stamp template from zilla774. [link]

[edit] It was suggested that I add the common symptoms of diabetes to the artist comment section. I think that's a great idea. The following were take from the American Diabetes Association website [link]
* Frequent urination
* Excessive thirst
* Extreme hunger
* Unusual weight loss
* Increased fatigue
* Irritability
* Blurry vision

I didn't have weight loss, but did have all the others.

[edit] Anyone may use this. No need to ask permission. If you use, please . I like to look at where it's being shown.

[edit 2008-12-15] Wow - it took me a year to catch the error in this comment. I originally said I was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes...in fact I have type-2. While it was inherited from my fathers side of the family, I was diagnosed when I was 35. Hardly "juvenile" diabetes, as type-1 is often called. I apologize for any confusion.

A majority of people on my dad's side of the family (him, his brother and sister, and his mother) have diabetes, and he thinks I (and my sister) most likely have/will end up having it as well.
I'm honestly kind of scared of having it.

My mother has type 1 diabetes, when i was born i was tested for diabetes or if im gonna get diabetes or something like that and it turned out my risk of getting it is small but my children or my grandchildren might get them.I personally would be terrified if i get it because ive seen what will happen to you when your sugar levels are low,one day my mom went into a coma because of her low sugar level, she was coughing up some sort of liquid while in coma and just looked awake but she didnt respond to our talking, she just stared at us.And also when your sugar levels are low enough you start behaving in a very weird way like be cheered up and do dumb stuff etc.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DwayneF In reply to 1000yearseternalmaze [2013-06-26 02:39:45 +0000 UTC]

There are two types of Diabetes. Type-1, is genetic and usually diagnosed in children or juveniles and is actually quite rare. Type-2, is usually diagnosed later in life and is commonly (though not always) related to excess weight.

[link]

Each instance of diabetes in your family would increase your chances. If you're already in your teens, you probably do not have to worry about Type-1. It would have already manifested symptoms by now. Type-2 is a different story. You could have no family member history, but still contract it. Take a look at the website, or search for others. Or talk to your doctor if you think you might have symptoms.

Type 1 Diabetes
β€’ Frequent urination
β€’ Unusual thirst
β€’ Extreme hunger
β€’ Unusual weight loss
β€’ Extreme fatigue and Irritability

Type 2 Diabetes
β€’ Any of the type 1 symptoms
β€’ Frequent infections
β€’ Blurred vision
β€’ Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
β€’ Tingling/numbness in the hands/feet
β€’ Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections

So putting on weight isnt a symptom?
Thank you for the answer.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DwayneF In reply to 1000yearseternalmaze [2013-06-29 02:41:04 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the person. For some, it could be a symptom. For others, they may gain weight for unrelated reasons, like overeating. That added weight brings on the Diabetic symptoms.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at around 15, and I haven't found anyone with type 2 around my age. :( I've been told it's due to a metabolism disorder I was born with, but whenever I get new doctors they still accuse me of lying, or the typical "bad lifestyle your fault" lecture, before I've actually explained my lifestyle to them. It doesn't run in my family either. I wonder if there's anyone out there the same...

Sorry to hear about the problems with the doctors. Metabolic Syndrome can cause pre-diabetes. I hope you find a doctor that will listen, test, and treat your condition as it needs to be.

I won't lie, I have been 500+ until I have been really ontop of it only recently. I just can't beleive that I simply ignored it like that for so long, but I have been inbetween 70 and about 200 for about two weeks now (:

Wow, that sounds dangerous. Glad you're on top of it now. If mine had ever gotten that high I wouldn't have been able to function. I would get headaches at 200. Much beyond that and I would get disoriented.

Hope you're able to better control your levels.

Trust me, I was sick constantly But I just didn't want to accept that it was the actual diabetes. Oviously this is a long time comitment and actions speak louder than words, but I plan on never letting it get that bad again c:

DwayneF In reply to CianaOfTheArts [2011-11-02 02:05:03 +0000 UTC]

Just remember how bad you felt then, and how you feel now. And think that your food choices directly effect how you feel. I won't say that I never indulge, but I make sure it's not every meal, and I really control portion size. Keep me posted

Yes, that is a very valid point (: You sound like you are pretty on tp of it!
Not to mention that I also have celiac dsease, so my body can not process any wheat,gluten, or barley. It makes my diet very limited, but I am pretty healthy because of it (:

Also added to those symptoms, for me, was headache...always be sure and talk to your doctor. For me it was relatively easy to get tested, just right there in the office (results were given in after few minutes). Hopefully most treatments now will be with oral medication instead of shots. At least that is what's true so far for me.

Early diagnosis is very important.

My twin sister, she was 14 at the time, was recently diagnosed (a year ago).

No one knew about, 'till she was almost in a coma.
She had all the symptoms except extreme hunger and irritability.

So this is a nice stamp for me and my family, since none of us knew what was happening.

I hope your sister is doing well. I'm guessing she has type-1, but maybe not. The best support I can suggest, is help her with what food she eats. It's easier to eat the right things when people around you aren't always eating the things you can't.

Tuxedo-panties In reply to DwayneF [2010-09-06 23:50:14 +0000 UTC]

type one, and yeah shes fine, getting along well, though she bemoans the lost of some of her favorite food and is very strong about diabetes and such. (Like more diet pop flavors) and is very dramatic about it. Well given that my friends and family don't really understand they don't change, and we can't ask them to change just for her. So I guess she just deals.

anenglishdirector [2009-12-11 23:26:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I have Type 1, and have had it for 14, going on 15 years now, as I'm nearly 17 : s
I've had to change my regime quite frequently, and I've recently been plcaed on the insulin pump, since it was made free by the NHS. We couldn't have afforded nearly Β£3000 a year for the upkeep otherwise : o
But, what with having it for so much of my life, I'm happy to talk about it. I mean, my biology teacher even wants me to teach the class for that lesson o.O

Yeah, I get sad sometimes, because, y'know...sometimes it just isn't fair. Or, it feels like it isn't fair.
All of my friends know how to handle anything to do with my illness, because I've trained them, and they know from watching me inject and such.
If your friends know, you'll have no problems~
So, yeah, I got really upset recently, actually...but, a good piece of poetry came from it xD
But seriously, it'd be so great if you didn't go out, doing an injection in public or at school, and some ass shouting: "Druggie!" at you. That, seriously gets you down.
They simply don't understand how severe Diabetes actually is. You can't get better. You can only aid.
Which is one of the most upsetting facts :c

I don't know where I'm going with this..
I just really wanted to get some thoughts out, to be honest.
Thanks for reading, and making the stamp~

Hoping for a cure..that'd be nice for Christmas, huh?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DwayneF In reply to anenglishdirector [2009-12-12 02:57:32 +0000 UTC]

Type-2 here, which is mostly under control with oral meds, and diet. I recently joined a gym to help shed some extra weight. I'm hoping to get my a1c down to a level where my Doctor will let me stop the meds. I hate the side effects.

But my worries can't compare to yours. I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 30's, so I didn't go though anything as a teenager. I had more than enough on my plate that I didn't need anything else for someone to use in a limerick.

I'm hoping for a cure as well. Not so much for people like me, that just need to watch what we eat and get some exercise. For people like you that HAVE to think about it every day. You've got my respect.
