Description Opening Friday, I will be playing Gwendolyn in my college's production of "The Importance of Being Earnest." The wig that was chosen for me was kind of awful, so I designed a period hairstyle for my own hair instead.

The time period is 1890's. These pictures along with some others from our costumer were helpful in designing this: [link]

Please keep in mind these photos were taken after our final dress and my hair got a bit crushed and mussed by the two hats I wear.

How To:
Section off hair for bangs
Make three pony tails (top, middle, and bottom) in the back of the head
Use another ponytail holder at the end of each ponytail an inch or so from the ends (to hold all the ends). On top pony tail, section off closer to the middle.
Fold each section of hair up and attach the ponytail ends with bobby pins.
Curl bangs and top pony tail ends with tiny curling iron and pin into place.

Details of Instruction
On middle pony tail, to make more volume, I first made a sock bun, then folded the ends over the bun to acheive the same folded look only bigger.
On the bottom pony tail, I folded the hair twice. Sectioning off the hair close to the top (with pony tail holder), I folded it first left and pinned the fold down hiding the pins in the fold.
Then pony tailed the ends and folded the hair to the right pinning it down in the same way. Hair should end up looking somewhat like a bowtie.

Very beautiful! I'd love to give this a try, but I have a pixie cut so it probably won't work. Hmm. XD

This is great! Finally. A hair thing done for live theatre! I've submitted this to our #TheatreArtists group. Have you done other theatre work?

Β I hope you approve and consider joining to submit more theatre artwork!

This is fantastic! Really, I love how you have instructions too. You know, alot of times when people do period costumes they screw up with the hair and makeup, which makes the whole thing look cheap. This is great, really.

Thank you so much! I'm going to try to find time to make the instructions more detailed and easier to follow soon.

Oh my god, my English class just finished reading "The Importance of Being Earnest"! It was hysterical! The hairstyle is pretty cute too! It must have looked great with the outfit and hat!

I do so love your hair tutorials. You always come up with such gorgeous period styles. Only such a pity I had my hair layered - it won't stick in any sort of style now, and I'm itching to try this out. Grow back, hair, grow back.

Aw, thank you so much! I'm hoping to do a lot more of them in the spring, hopefully with better pictures so they're easier to duplicate.

I’d love to see more hair tutorials from you. ^^, I love trying out new hairstyles, especially period ones. The one you have in your DevID especially looks lovely. Like I said, I just have to wait until I have hair again - used to have it down to my waist, then the split ends started getting seriously out of hand and I had to chop off a good 30cm.

The photos look really good, actually. There’s nothing I can see wrong with them. What’d be useful is a more detailed wording - but then again I always suck at following written hair-do instructions.

Thank you! The one in my ID is one I do a lot... I can get something up about that soon. I've been doing it since my hair was just at my shoulders, so it might be something you could do already.

Well, the photos are fine, but during the run of the show it got easier to do and came out a lot neater and prettier.

Yeah, the writting is hard to do, I might start making accompaning videos for YouTube.

Thank you, wish I'd taken shots some other nights when it came out better and before it got smushed.

You have a striking resemblance to Tina Fey!

Interesting, I've never gotten that comparison before! Usually people say Winona Ryder... I think I like Fey more.

Thanks for the quickie tips on how to do this. I'm sick of using wigs in the FL heat so I've been letting my hair grow-out so I can try more period updos. (updo's?) I might give this one a try later in the week...just for giggles.

CreedsGalBirdy In reply to Durnesque [2010-11-09 22:59:23 +0000 UTC]

Will do! BTW, when they're not curled, about how long are your bangs? Like..brushing the eyebrows length? I suppose that's ideal?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Durnesque In reply to CreedsGalBirdy [2010-11-10 02:49:39 +0000 UTC]

They're actually swoop cut, so I used long pieces pinned farther back to fill them out. Would probably work easier and neater with even cut bangs a little below the brow.
