Description
Happy #ammoniteweek ! Some may have seen on E.D.G.E the announcement of Ammonite week, a call to learn about and participate in the celebration of these wonderful creatures, including making art. Ammonites are Cephalopods that had shells and were quite populous in the Mezozoic era, completely vanishing after the KT extinction event. Though one might guess a close relation to the modern Nautilus, they share closer relation to Squid and Octopi.
This fellow is Didymoceras, a genus of Ammonite from the late Cretaceous (approx. 76 million years ago), with an incredibly unique spiral shaped shell! It is speculated to have moved though the water vertically, with the shape of the shell facilitating this movement. I will also personally speculate that the shell may have been useful for sexual display, which is why I added the blue bands on the shell. In the background you may see a Plesiosaur, other Ammonites, and a Cretaceous shark!
Finally, I will say I like the way the water looks
