This was the last of the illustrations commissioned during my 2008 commission window by Cornelius [link] for his characters, Meian and Houki-Boshi.I had a blast with the idea on this one - the dragon has just unleashed quite the inferno, and appears suitably pleased with himself. Reducing a swathe of jungle to a smoldering crater of molten earth was surprisingly fun - and I got to make smoke effects! Smoke is so interesting to work with, I really need to find more excuses to jam that into graphic novel scenes… *Scribbles mental note* I don’t know whom was threatening the duo, but it’s a fair bet they’re participating in that fantastic slurry of magma baking at the bottom of the crater. And really, can you feel any sympathy for them? Who in their RIGHT MIND would look at that dragon, stop, and think: “Yeah…. I can take ’im!” Such flights of delusion are sure to end badly at the hands of dragons.

Wooow, how have you made the smoke?? It's amazing! Ahd the dragon, I've loved this skin, he looks like a lion or a king... or both!

The smoke was fun to make. E ) I used the 'Smear' tool in photoshop to smudge around some gray paint blobs, and then adjusted the opacity with a mask on the layer. That's what I usually always do for smoke, steam, etc, is the smear tool.

Wow, I used to do something like that. But I don't know why, it didn't worked as I expected... Well, I'm studying digital painting harder now, so I'll try to do some smoke like yours to train.

My older brother use to be all into Terry Pratchett and his Discworld books.
Oh, another thing you should check out by Pratchett was a book he co-wrote with Neil Gaiman called "Good Omens" I haven't read it yet (I own a copy) But I hear it's excellent.

and i assumed you made the smoke efx without brushes. how did you manage to make that happen?

The smoke effect isn't nearly as hard as it looks... I use a brush first, at a lower opacity on a new layer, to paint some big half-clear mushy shapes and dots. Then I use the 'smudge' tool in Photoshop to smear the stuff everywhere. A little practice, and it's pretty easy to get a cool smoky-wispy effect going. 8 )

Aw snap... That dragon has a nasty fireball inferno to cause all this. Nice work David, just looking at this raises my body temperature.
Though... can a forest really turn into magma/lava? Not to be a nit picker XD, but what would leaf, swamp, grass, dirt matter become when super heated?

Well my concern is that by definition, magma and lava are molten -rock-. Would that dragon regularly feast on rocks and convert then into magma in an internal furnace? If so... goodness gracious I cannot describe the horror.

That, or it could be magic. I mean, it's the Dreamworld we're talking about here. It's hard to think of scientific explanations for super powers, teleporting squids, etc.
Though, yeah, that would be frightening. <_<

Wow I thought it was a picture from the the thumbnail! THis is SOOOO cool! The smoke looks awesome! You should make blue or purple smoke that would be even COOLER!
The smoke really sets off the bright golden orange on the dragon it looks really cool
Mess with the dragon and you get the horns... AND fire so you're double screwed!
