Description Four trains in one shot all moving. A eastbound BNSF intermodal takes the flyover while a westbound Union Pacific double stack heads west on the high line. Below, a empty coal drag heads north on the Fort Scott subdivision while a local with a Santa Fe caboose heads south.

My favorite spot in Kansas City was...the whole damn town. Ease of access, lots of trains, very little traffic, and lots of major yards only 20 minutes from each other make KC a great railroad town. Not to mention it ranks #1 in tonnage and #2 in trains behind Chicago. Im ready to head back.

Holy crap I've never actually seen a caboose as part of a train!

Yeah, VERY rare anymore. The caboose was on a short local.

True that. I only find them on my model trains these days.

I miss shooting in KC. I can't complain about the action I see in the Heidelberg/Mannheim area though...

Wow, must be busy in Heidelberg/Mannheim to say the action is good compared to KC. Hell, Im ready to go BACK...maybe I wont come back to Wheeling! HAHA

I wouldn't say the action's better, but it's certainly different. Mannheim's on the spine of the [former] West German high speed network, so there's a constant parade of ICE trains, IC trains, and EuroCity trains running towards and from Munich, Stuttgart, Zurich, Strassbourg, Paris, Frankfurt, and Berlin. There's a huge freight yard between Mannheim and Heidelberg, but freight trains are quite rare compared to all the passenger traffic that includes EMU's, DMU's, high speed trains, and locomotive-hauled consists under wire and Diesel. That's not to mention the tram action since the two cities' tram networks are also interconnected.

Nice, that just sounds VERY busy describing all that. But in all honesty, I like freight more than passenger so...

HerrDrayer In reply to DragonWolfACe [2010-02-19 07:48:27 +0000 UTC]

Of course you do. You don't have any choice about it in KC. Let's see, there's the Southwest Chief once a day each way, two departures for St. Louis per day, and two arrivals from St. Louis per day versus literally hundreds of freight movements. I suppose one can expect the occasional Southern Belle movement too, but that's based out of Shreveport. Passenger fans are destined to be disappointed in KC. If you lived in a country with frequent passenger service and less freight, your sentiments would shift.

Kansas City is the second busiest rail hub on the continent, second only to Chicago, and that's without a major infusion of commuter rail. You take out Metra and AmTrak, and Chicago's probably on an even scale with tonnage and traffic rates in KC.

Great shot. I'll be studying your material for reference.
